Jim Rome’s Bio

He was born James Phillip Rome on 14th October 1964 in Los Angeles, California to his parents, Jay Rome and Jan Rome. He rounded up his high school education at Calabasas High School at the age of 18 in 1982.

Rome attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned a degree in communications in 1987 when he was 23. Interestingly, the University has produced several alumni members who have written their names in the sands of time. Some of them include Walter Kohn, Herbert Kroemer, Alan J. Heeger, David J. Gross, Steve Aoki, Larry Dierker, Raymond Fisher and Jason Lezak among many others.

Rome’s Career Progression

The sports broadcaster’s career journey began in 1987 at KCSB-FM, a college radio station for the University of California, Santa Barbara. While there, he served as the sports director and also did some time at KTMS, first as a traffic reporter and later as a sports talk host.

He started professionally when he relocated to San Diego in 1990 where he began to work with radio station XTRA Sports690. It was here that “The Jim Rome Show” was birthed and was eventually syndicated in 1996 to a couple of local stations which were affiliated with ESPN Radio.

While his popularity continues to increase, he started hosting a number of shows for ESPN including Talk2, and Jim Rome Is Burning. He parted ways with the network in 2012 and began his journey with CBS. In 2013, CBS syndicated Rome’s show in a contract that became effective in January.

According to reports, “The Jim Rome Show” is listened to in the United States and Canada on over 200 radio stations. In addition, it has a large audience numbering about 2.5 million on normal alone. He runs The Jim Rome Podcast, which dishes out fresh content, and Jim Rome’s Daily Jungle, which gives a daily round-up of the best of The Jim Rome Show.

Other shows he hosted include; The Last Word (FOX Sports Net), The FX Sports Show (FX), and Jim Rome on Showtime (Showtime).

How The California Born Sports Broadcaster And Talk Show Host Made His $110 Million Fortune From His Broadcasting Career, Real Estate, And Horse Racing

Rome has built a legacy that would last him a lifetime in the history of sports broadcasting. What he achieved career-wise reflects in his finances, however, he has been reaping heavily from his investments in other areas such as real estate and horse racing.

He Is Among The Top 5 Earners In Sports Broadcasting

Rome’s contract with CBS sees him earning an annual salary of $30 million. He first signed the deal with CBS Sports Radio for his show and commentary in 2012, which took effect in January 2013. It is not clear how much he started receiving initially, but in 2017 he signed a long-term deal with CBS.

As a result of this, an unanswered question still remains, did CBS start paying him $30 million after the 2017 deal? The truth of how much he was earning became public knowledge in 2022 when FOX announced a $375 million 10-year deal with NFL quarterback, Tom Brady. The deal would see him earning $37.5 million annually as an analyst, but that would take effect after his retirement.

With this development, Brady would top the list of highest-paid sports broadcasters in the world. At the moment, the top 5 include;

  • Tom Brady ($37.5 million)
  • Jim Rome ($30 million)
  • Tony Romo ($18 million)
  • Troy Aikman ($18 million)
  • Michael Strahan ($17 million)

Rome’s Finances Are Boosted By His Investment In Real Estate

It is obvious that The Jim Rome Show host doesn’t depend solely on what he gets from his broadcasting career. Since 2015, he has been involved in real estate and smiling to the bank. According to reports, he listed the Laguna Beach house in 2014 for $6 million, but he was forced to cut down the price to $5.5 when buyers didn’t show interest.

Initially, he bought the house in 2010 for $5.1 million. Cutting down the price to $5.5 million offers him a good gain.

Three years after listing his Laguna Beach property, he sold another in Irvine, California for $12.5 million. The custom-built house was originally listed for $13.9 million. In 2021, the property’s value skyrocketed to $49.95 million after it was renovated.

Rome sold another of his house in Indio, California for $2.5 million in 2018.

He Was Initially Not A Fan Of Horse Racing,But He Invested In The Sport After Falling In Love With

The 60 year-old didn’t see horse racing as a sport but as a bet. However, he changed the deposition following an interview with Kent Desormeaux. To show how interested he was, he started investing in the sport.

He founded Jungle Racing, LLC and went on to own a couple of horses in collaboration with other stables. His success story with horses began in 2012 when his stable’s mare, Mizdirection, won the $150,000 Monrovia Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, according to celebritynetworth.com.

By the time the Mizdirection quit racing in 2014, it generated about $1.72 million. Moreover, it was sold for $2.7 million.

Rome’s Shared Belief won more than $2 million in 2014 after winning 8 out of 9 races.
