He started making money when he began his acting career in 1987, when he was 25, by appearing in three episodes of Brond, a British drama TV series. He then acted in two other TV shows, Screen Two and Bookie, in 1988, before making his first film appearance as Neal McBride in Harbour Beat, a Scottish-Australian movie, in 1990.

In 1994, he landed his breakthrough role as Matthew in Four Weddings and a Funeral, a British romantic comedy film directed by Mike Newell. The film was a huge hit, earning $245.7 million at the box office with a budget of only $4.4 million. It also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and Hannah was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

He continued his successful film career in 1998 when he starred as James Hammerton in Sliding Doors, a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Peter Howitt. The film was a global hit, making $67 million with a budget of only $6 million. It also became the highest-grossing local film in the UK, earning £12 million.

Hannah then played Jonathan Carnahan in the Mummy Trilogy: The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). The three films were blockbuster hits, making over a billion dollars in total. The first film grossed $416.4 million, the second film made $435 million, and the third film garnered $403.4 million.

John Hannah was born on April 23, 1962, in a town called East Kilbride in Scotland. His parents were Susan, a cleaner at a famous store, and John, a toolmaker. He grew up with two older sisters.

He went to Heathery Knowe Primary School and Claremont High School. After that, he learned how to be an electrician. But he had a passion for acting, so he joined the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated from the academy and started his acting career in the late 1980s

He married Joanna Roth, a Danish-British actress, in 1996. They have two children together.
