Jonny O’Mara is a British professional tennis player from Scotland. He took an early interest in tennis and started playing when he was around four or five. At twelve, the scot ranked No. 1 in the UK following his success at the British Under-16 Championship.

He won Gold in 2017 with Great Britain at the BNP World University Championships in France. That same year, he made his first Grand Slam appearance at Wimbledon after receiving a wildcard at the 2017 Aegon International Eastbourne ATP main draws.

He is proving to be a master of the doubles after winning his third ATP250 title partnering with Ken Skupski at the 2021 Sofia Open. While his career highlight remains when he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2020.

1. Who is he?

His parents Dave and Jane gave birth to him on the 2nd of March 1995 in Arbroath, Scotland, but other reports put Keighley, West Yorkshire, England. He has two brothers; Ben (younger) who plays cricket and Chris (older) who works in a musical theatre. His parents live in Letham Grange, while his mother works in the town.

The 30 year-old Scot developed a passion for tennis from a very young age. He started playing at a local Next Gen Club in Dundee at the age of four or five. His first coaches at the Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club were Mark Walker and Andy Murray’s mother; Judy Murray.

O’Mara had his college education at the University of Stirling in Scotland from 2017 to 2018.

2. He won the British Under-16 Championships 

The Arbroath native had an incredible junior career. By the time he was twelve, O’Mara was ranked No. 1 in the United Kingdom. He won the Under-16 Winter Cup for Great Britain and also competed in the Junior Grand Slam, where the Scot reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2013.

He subsequently reached a career-high in the ATP singles at 489, won  1 future title, and made it to three more finals.

3. The Arbroath native started specializing in doubles after winning 16 Future Titles

O’Mara’s decision to specialize in Doubles in the summer of 2017 came after he won 16 Future titles. Since the win, it was forward ever and backward never. He went on to win 4 Challenger titles in Izmir, Bergamo, Surbiton, and Orleans.

The biggest accolade of his career has been winning an ATP title at Eastbourne together with Luke Bambridge in 2018.

4. He won Gold Medal for Britain in 2017

The 30 year-old tennis player loves playing in a team. In 2017, he joined the Great Britain university team that competed at the BNP World University Championships in France. The team reached the final and won a gold medal for Great Britain in December 2017.

5. What was O’Mara’s best-ever US Open result?

The Arbroath tennis star matched his best-ever result at the US Open when he and partner Aisam Qureshi beat 16th seeded Belgians Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. The win at Flushing Meadows in September 2021 handed the pair a big match against Spaniard Marcel Granollers and Argentine Horatio Zeballos.

His partner Qureshi reached the semi-finals of the US Open in New York in 2011 and 2012.

6. Andy Murray inspires him

O’Mara idolizes his fellow Scot, and one of the greatest tennis stars, Andy Murray. He sees his fellow compatriot as an inspiration for not just him, but for everyone who picks up a racket from Scotland. He believes if Murray who comes from a little town achieved a lot of success on the tennis court, then what stops him from doing it?

Since the early stages of his career, the Arbroath tennis star has been looking up to the former World No.1 who has won 3 Grand Slam singles titles, 46 ATP singles titles, including 14 ATP Masters 1000 events.

7. He is earning a good amount from playing tennis

The 30 year-old tennis play from Arbroath’s finances is growing thanks to his tennis career. So far, the Scot earned a total of $436, 417 from all competitions. He also made money from sponsorships, commercial and endorsement deals. All these puts together contribute to his estimated net which should be between $500, 000 and $1 million, however, other sources have quoted distinct figures.

O’Mara is yet to walk down the aisle. Currently, he is in a relationship with Lauren McKinney. The pair started dating in 2019. No one knows where exactly the relationship is heading, but who knows Lauren might just be the one he settles down with.

That being said, it is possible he has dated one or two women before her.

9. He is passionate about animals

The Scot loves keeping animals as pets. He shares this passion for animals with his girlfriend Lauren McKinney. They both have two pet dogs named Tia and Bruno. A little investigation reveals he owns Bruno, while Tia belongs to Lauren.

Standing at 6 feet (1.83m), the Arbroath tennis ace is quite tall. His bodyweight is 80kg (176lbs).
