1. Two Months After His Birth The Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) Seize 490 Hostages At The Residence of The Japanese Ambassador

Just months after Varillas was born, 14 members of the MRTA  concealed themselves as waiters and caterers and slipped into the residence of Japanese Ambassador Morihisa Aoki on 16th December 1996. They held 490 people including some top government officials in Peru who were at the Ambassador’s home as guests in a reception marking the birthday of the Japanese emperor.

Some days later, the majority of the hostages were released but 72 were still held. The MRTA  demanded that 400 of their members imprisoned by the Peruvian government be released. Then-president of Peru Alberto Fujimori refused to give in to their demands, instead, he sent a 140-special forces team to free the 72 hostages.

On 22nd April 1997, barely 6 months to Varillas’ 1st birthday, the hostages were rescued by the special forces team.

2. Varillas Fell In Love With Tennis At A Tender Age

The Peruvian tennis star had a passion for tennis when he was quite young. When he turned 5 in 2001, he started playing tennis. It was at a tennis club where his parents are members. So, it is not entirely out of play to say his parents were his motivation.

3. He Turned Pro At The Age Of 17

Juanpi as he is fondly called went pro in  2013 at 17. Since then, he competed in several challenger tours winning the 2019 Campinas, 2019 Santo Domingo, 2021 Biella-5, and 2021 Santiago-2. Similarly, he represents his country at some major tennis international competitions such as the Davis Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021).

in 2020, he made his ATP main draw debut at the 2020 Chile Open. Though he gained qualification as a lucky loser, he was able to make it to the second round by beating Filip Horansky of Slovakia. Unfortunately, he lost to Spaniard Alberto Ramos Vinolas.

As of May 2022, he is ranked 104 in the ATP singles ranking. Based on this, he is the No. 1 Peruvian tennis player in the singles ranking. Besides, his dream is to be in the top 100 in the world. As things stand now, he may be achieving this dream soon.
