Kelley O’Hara is an American soccer star who has become famous for her exploits as a wingback and midfielder for the United States women’s national soccer team. She also plays as a forward and right defender for Washington Spirits, a National Women’s Soccer League football club.

During her career, Kelley has won different awards and accolades. She is an Olympic gold medallist and has also won the FIFA World Cup for her country. She is respected for her skill and stamina on the pitch and has become an inspiration to younger players.

Kelley O’Hara Biography

Kelley O’Hara whose real name is Kelley Maureen O’Hara was born on August 4, 1988, in Fayetteville, Georgia, the USA to Irish parents, Dan and Karen O’Hara. She was raised in Peachtree City, Georgia with her siblings; Jerry and Erin O’Hara.

For her education, Kelley attended Starr’s Mill High School in Fayette County. While she was in high school, she joined the varsity team known as the Panthers and was instrumental in helping the team into the 5A State title in 2006 as she recorded an outstanding 20 goals with16 assists. However, in her sophomore year, the team placed second in the State Championships.

Eventually, Kelley earned the title of the Parade All-American in her junior year while in her senior year, she was listed in the All-League, All-County, and All-State for four years. Additionally, in 2006, Kelly was named the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) Player of the Year, as well as the Gatorade Georgia State Player of the Year. She was also named NSCAA All-American.

Following her graduation from High School, Kelley proceeded to Stanford University. During her freshman year, she joined the college team, the Cardinals. The soccer star ended up netting 9 goals for the team in 2006 and repeated the same lead during her sophomore year. She also helped the Cardinal into the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Again, Kelley helped the Standford team to advance to the College Cup for the first time since 1993, though the team was ousted out in the semi-finals after they suffered a 0–1 defeat to Notre Dame.

Kelley became a record-breaking player as she finished her college career with one of the best goal-scoring streaks in the history of the team with 57 goals and 32 assists.

Considering her very successful career and endorsement deals, it is apparent that Kelley has been among the top-earning female footballers for some time.

According to reports, she is said to have a net worth of about $2 million dollars while she earns up to $300,000 in salary. Her wealth is predominantly from her soccer career and other endorsements.

Kelley O’Hara’s club career kicked off when she joined the Peachtree City Lazers from1997–1999, after which she moved to the Lightning Soccer Club in 2000. Her stay there spanned to 2001.

In 2007, she joined the Concorde Fire Soccer Club until 2008 and during her career with Concorde, she helped the team to win the 2007 GA U19G State Cup. She also led the team to the Semi-Finals of the Regionals.

Also in the summer of 2009, Kelley O’Hara played for the Pali Blues in the USL W-League semi-pro as she netted four goals before exiting from the club. By 2010, Kelly joined the FC Gold Pride after she was drafted third overall by the club at the 2010 WPS Draft. While she was with the team, she helped them win the WPS Championship Trophy.

Although the team had a victorious season, the club folded up on November 16, 2010. The reasons for this may not be unconnected to financial constraints. Consequently, Kelley signed with the Sky Blue FC on the 11th of January, 2013. After her debut with the team, she was able to shuffle through different positions from a forward to winger, and to being a right-back, as well as a central midfielder. She has proven to be a versatile player but before leaving the team in 2017 Kelley has made 75 appearances with 15 goals for the club.

Upon leaving Sky Blue FC, Kelley moved to Utah Royals FC.  She was traded to Washington Spirit on December 2, 2022. the deal cost them $75, 000.

International Career

With regards to her international career, Kelley O’Hara has patriotically represented her home country US in various capacities. In 2005 she played in the U-20 US national team where she scored 24 goals during her 35 under-20 caps, in which she became the third-highest goalscorer in the US U-20 levels.

Also, she was part of the US squad that competed in the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship leading the team to finish at fourth place. Again in 2007, she played for the US team in the 2007 Pan American Games, where she scored four goals though the team was defeated in the final game by Brazil which ended 0–5 against the US.

However, in February 2008, Kelley played in the U-20 Four Nations Tournament in Chile. She then made her last appearance for the U-20 team in July 2008, at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico.

Kelly O’Hara later advanced to the senior US national team in 2008 when she was invited into the squad in December 2009. She was then featured in the January 2010 training camp preparatory to the 2010 Algarve Cup. Eventually, Kelley earned her first senior national team cap in March 2010, when she came in as a substitute in the friendly match against Mexico.

Later, in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Kelley replaced Lindsay Tarpley who tore her ACL in a send-off match against Japan on May 14, 2011. Kelly then earned one cap at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup during the final group stage game against Sweden. The United States ended up winning the silver medal in the tournament.

Also, Kelley featured in the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying game against Guatemala on January 22, 2012, and subsequently, the US team qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London while she featured in all games of the Olympics.

Featuring in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Kelley O’Hara scored her first international goal for the United States team in the 2–0 victory over Germany in the semi-final game of the world cup and she helped the team to win their first World Cup title since 1999  which became the third overall World Cup title of the United States since the maiden 1991 Women’s World Cup.

Apparently, due to Kelley’s outstanding career performance, she has earned the confidence of a couple of companies thus, she was endorsed by the Under Armour brand and has appeared in multiple commercials and advertisements for the company. Also in 2015, she featured in television commercials to promote chocolate milk for the National Fluid Milk Processor Promotion Board.

Kelley O’Hara is undoubtedly at the peak of her career and so far, she has been able to amass numerous titles to her name some of which are the WPS Championship in 2010, three Algarve Cup titles in 2011, 2013, and 2015, as well as the Olympic Gold Medal in 2012, and the CONCACAF Women’s Championship twice which were in 2014 and 2018.

Additionally, Kelly clinched two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and the just concluded 2019 world cup, to mention but a few.

And for her individual titles, she has earned the Pac-10 Conference First-Team thrice in 2006, 2007, and 2009 respectively, as well as being the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year twice in 2007 and 2009. In addition to these, Kelly was a Hermann Trophy Winner in 2009 and she was also listed in NCAA All-American First-Team of 2009 as well as the ESPN Academic All-America First-in the same year.
