Kyra Cooney-Cross plays in a striking position for Melbourne Victory of the W-League. She has represented Australia at the under-17, 19, and 20 levels before getting an opportunity to play with the senior national team for the first time in June 2021.

She is a versatile and creative player with the ability to play from any position which makes her a playmaker, striker, and winger. She is part of the Matildas squad that vied for a medal at the Tokyo Olympics but lost 3-4 to the USA in the 3rd place match for a Bronze medal on 5th August 2021.

If she continues to impress her national team coaches, she might be well on her way to becoming a permanent member of the senior team.

She is currently 23 years old.

Who Is Kyra Cooney-Cross?

She was born Kyra Lillee Cooney-Cross on 15th February 2002 to her parents Jai Cross and Jessica Cooney in Herston, Queensland, Australia. She grew up in a family with a football orientation, since her father played football but at a semi-professional level with Sunshine Coast.

So, it is only logical that his daughter was raised with the ball at her feet. She started kicking the ball with boys and girls that were older than her. When she turned 13, she started developing her soccer skills at the Football Federation Victoria National Training Center (FFV NTC) and later went for a trial with the Young Matildas.

For her education, she went to Surf Coast Secondary College in Ballarat High School.

Cooney-Cross began her early club career with Ballarat City FC under coach Tessa Curtain for 3 years. In 2017, she joined Melbourne Victory in the W-League for the 2017/18 campaign. She played for 90 minutes in her first appearance for the club in a 2-1 win over Canberra United on 28th October 2017.

She netted her first goal for the club in a devastating 3-1 home defeat to Newcastle Jets. As the season came to a close, she had played in Victory’s all 12 games, with 2 goals. The following season she only played 4 of the club’s 12 games, however, the club clinched the W-League Premiership title.

The striker signed with Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2019/20 campaign, scoring in her first game for the club with a free-kick at the 92nd minute. The goal handed them a 2-1 home victory over Adelaide United.

She returned back to Melbourne Victory after spending a season with Western Sydney Wanderers in December 2020. Her 120th-minute direct corner kick goal gave the club victory over Sydney FC in the 2021 W-League Grand Final.

On the international level, Cooney-Cross was a member of Australia’s under-17 side that played the qualifying rounds of the 2017 AFC Under-16 Women’s Championship with 6 goals. She was later listed in the team for the Championship finals.

The striker also played in the 2019 AFC Under-19 Women’s Championship qualifiers where she scored 6 goals. She was also part of the Under-20 team that represented Australia at the 2019 AFC U-20 Women’s Championship, scoring a goal in a 5-1 humiliating defeat to North Korea in their opening match.

She made her first appearance for the senior Matildas in a friendly match that ended 3-2 in favor of Denmark on 10th June 2021. She is also part of the team that represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics.

The striker has never played in an Olympics before now. This is her first time of being in an Olympic squad for Australia. This makes her a first-time Olympian.

2. She Was Part Of Australia’s 2019 FIFA World Cup Squad

It is the joy of every play or athlete to represent his or her nation at any major international sports event. Despite being young, she was listed in the Matildas 2019 FIFA Women’s world cup squad but as a standby player.

3. Her Style of Play

She has the physical qualities and technical abilities in relation to her explosive speed- a scare for defenders. Playing with both feet gives her the advantage of striking the ball with either left or right at any given time, which is what modern football is about.

She knows how to deliver perfect set pieces which is accompanied by her amazing dribbling skills- this sees her racking up assists.

4. She Quit School For Football

Coming from a football family, it was easy for her to fall in love with the game. Having a father that played and a mother that encourages you to go after what you want sounds perfect for her. She discontinued education to pursue a career in football.
