Leonie Maier Biography

The skilled defender has played for the Bundesliga-winning side, Bayern Munich, helping them to lift two trophies before departing to Arsenal, where she currently mounts the back line. Leonie is able to understand the game better than most players and she can match whatever it throws at her without losing sight of the goal. She was included in the FIFA FIFPRO World XI in 2016.

This star athlete was born Leonie Rebekka Maier on September 29, 1992, in Stuttgart, Germany. She spent her early years honing her talent and refining her skills by playing for youth teams such as TV Aldingen and JSG Remseck. Leonie got her first taste of professional football when she signed with VfL Sindelfingen in 2009. She played there for one year, during which time she scored 9 goals in 31 appearances.

Her next club stint was at SC 07 Bad Neuenahr, playing in the topmost Frauen-Bundesliga division. Leone Maier made a total of 65 regular season appearances in her three-year stay, putting up an impressive 7 goals. She left the club in 2013 after it filed for bankruptcy following its president death.

Leonie was picked up by Bayern Munich later that year and she went on to win the Bundesliga trophy two consecutive times in 2014 and 2015. The indomitable defender played 96 games as part of Bayern’s first team in the six years she spent there. Her name ended up on the score sheets on four occasions. After her contract expired, Leonie made the decision to move to Arsenal FC in May 2019.

Soccer Career with German National Team

Moving on to her national football career, Leonie Maier was called up to the senior team in 2013 and she netted her first goal at the international level on July 19, 2013, while playing a friendly game with Canada. It was the only goal recorded in the keenly contested match.

Leonie also made the selection for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad, although Germany bowed out in fourth place; and the 2016 Summer Olympics where the German team took home the shiniest prize. Her other national team features include the UEFA Women’s Championship in 2017 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.

The versatile player was part of her country’s under-17 squad at the 2009 U-17 Women’s Championship where they emerged the winner and the U-19 Women’s Championship in 2011 which they also won. She and the rest of the German team came second in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Two years later, they were successful in taking home the title in the 2014 Algarve Cup tournament.

Her Family

Leonie Maier is one of four children born to her parents. Her father and mother’s names have not been confirmed as the German defender is yet to reveal this information.
