Lisa Sthalekar is a cricket commentator and one of the greatest female cricketers in Australian sports history. The former cricketer had little success when she started playing cricket but eventually, her performance improved over the years. She was introduced to the game by her foster father who believed cricket runs in the blood of all Indians.
Sthalekar rose from the Indian orphanage to becoming one of the most recognizable female cricketers in the world, she achieved quite a lot before she retired from the game. Sthalekar wrote in her autobiography about how she had to fight depression and emotional struggle after the loss of her mother due to breast cancer.
WHO IS LISA STHALEKAR?
Sthalekar was born on august 13, 1979 in Pune Maharashtra, India. She was placed at an orphanage, Shreevatsa in Pune’s Sassoon hospital by her biological parents who could not raise her. She was adopted by Haren (an Indian) and Sue Sthalekar(English).
The couple was from Michigan, USA. They had a daughter and were in India to adopt a boy but ended adopting Lisa. Sue was attracted to Lisa’s big brown eyes immediately she saw her. Haren and his wife completed the legal process and brought her back to the United States. Lisa was initially named Laila but was renamed by her foster parents.
Due to her father’s Christian missionary work, her whole family moved to Kenya for some time before they settled in Sydney. Sthalekar attended Cherrybrook public school and Cherrybrook Technology High School. She later attended a private Anglican School on the north shore of Sydney. She graduated from Sydney University earning a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Religious Studies.
STHALEKAR’S PROFESSIONAL CAREER
Sthalekar began her amazing career journey in late 1997 when she played in the Women’s National Cricket League as a specialist bowler. She made a total of 1/120 in her maiden campaign which was not really impressive. Her performance improved over the two next seasons with 8 and 15 wickets respectively. She scored 169 runs with 33 as the best score in three years.
She was called into the Australian for the first time to play as a bowler after she scored 112 runs and took 11 wickets in the WNCL in 2000-2001. She made her debut in One Day International (ODI) against England and ended the tour of the British Isles with five wickets from many other matches. She later developed into a frontline batswoman in 2002 and made her first half-century with four in all for the season. She had a total of 347 runs which was more than her previous seasons altogether and took 11 wickets when new south wales won their sixth WNCL.
In the next international seasons, Lisa Sthalekar struggled with the ball taking only 8 wickets in 2 matches. She made her test debut against England in 2003 and had 120 not out and in her second match, she took three wickets in the two tests. From 2003-2004 she took 14 wickets and reached 250 runs in each season. In 2005, Sthalekar played for Australia in South African taking seven wickets and scored 55 against India in the final. After the triumph at the world cup, she toured the British Isles and made her maiden ODI century against Ireland.
Her international season from 2006-2007 was quite impressive as she scored y04 runs at 67.11 passing 40 in 9 of her 12 innings but she, unfortunately, struggled with the bat as she took 10 wickets at 41.00.
Lisa Sthalekar was Australia’s leading wicket-taker during the 2009 world cup that was held in New South Wales and Canberra. She had 13 wickets at 15.69 and 70 runs at 14.00 which made Australia lost the third-place playoff to India. She had her best ODI bowling figures in early 2010 when she had 5/35 in her 100th match. Her team defeated New Zealand and she took 12 wickets from seven matches. Her career has been considered as one of the most glorious in women’s cricket.

It is known, however, that she now lives in Sydney where she was said to be helping an 88-year-old neighbor buy groceries and other things as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.
