Matt Sydal was born Matthew Joseph Korklan on the 19th of March, 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri. Matt was born to Jewish school teachers and is one of the three children they had, who all happen to be boys. Of his two siblings, one is also a wrestler and his wrestling name is Mike Sydal.
Matt’s wrestling began when he was at Parkway West High School, where he was part of his school’s wrestling team. By the time he was in his senior year he was already training with a professional organization, which he did for three months. Matt had this fear that he will not be successful at wrestling and even if he was successful he was not sure that he could make ends meet by being a wrestler. These fears led to him getting a degree in marketing from the University of Missouri. While he was at college he still found a way to wrestle which he mostly did during the weekends.
Sydal’s debut in wrestling occurred in 2000, when he was done with the three months training he had with Gateway Championship Wrestling, they also happened to be the first professional body he worked with. In 2004, when he was still in college he won his first championship. The competition was for the Light Heavyweight category of the IWA Mid-South Championship.
Over the course of his career, Matt Sydal has had wins and losses. But for every professional wrestler, joining WWE is an important part of your career trajectory and when he had the opportunity to do so in 2007 he did not hesitate. By the time he was part of the World Wrestling Entertainment, Sydal had already worked with three wrestling organizations, organizations that are all part of the independent circuit in the world of wrestling. He was with WWE for a short while but in that period he was able to display his skill to a much larger audience, as WWE has a much larger audience reach and fan base than the other organizations he had worked for.
