Born into a family of 6, Mike is the oldest of the 4 kids born to Mr. Murray Malott and Anne Malott. He has 2 sisters named Lauren Malott and Kathryn Malott while his younger brother is named Jeff Malott.

He attended a private prep school growing up. According to his Wikipedia page, Mike went to a post-secondary school in Nova Scotia named Dalhousie University. UFC.com also mentioned that ‘Proper’ (his nickname) attended Hillfield Strathallan College.

Mike Malott was born on November 7, 1991, in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He left home to pursue a career in mixed martial arts after falling in love with it while in his private school.

The Canadian-born had the option of playing Ice-hockey as his sister, Lauren is a multiple champion in Ice Hockey but he chose MMA instead. He even began training in a local karate gym where he met a couple of fighters who further inspired his passion for MMA.

2. Mike Malott’s Love for Fighting Came Naturally

As already stated, Mike chose to fight in place of other sports like Ice Hockey which is a common sport amongst Canadians. He believes MMA came naturally to him and so it was easy for him to fit in.

With his passion fueled, teenage Malott told his friends that he would one day fight in the UFC. This announcement seemed impossible at the time because of Mike’s physical appearance but he eventually worked hard enough to build enough weight to get to where he is now.

At the age of 17, he was at House of Champions, Stoney Creek, Ontario where he trained with Kru Alin Halmagean. During his post-secondary education, he began training at Titans MMA and then had his first professional MMA fight. This fight was against James Saunders and the young Ontario-born won the match.

He went on to win 4 fights back-to-back before suffering his first loss against Hakeem Dawodu. After this, in 2015, he had his first draw against Ousmane Thomas Diagne. He quickly went back to winning ways in his subsequent fights.

3. Malott Took a Break from Fighting and Began Coaching

After winning a match against Craig Shintani, Mike decided to go on a brief break from fighting. At the end of 2017, he stopped fighting and then went on to training and was eventually named a coach in the Team Alpha Male gym.

He was a Striking coach at the gym located in Sacramento. According to Proper, he didn’t envy the fighter he had to train because at the time he had no more passion for MMA. He admitted that he only fought out of discipline and no more for the passion and love he initially had.

However, while he trained other fighters, the hunger to get back into the ring began to develop.

Mike Malott spent 3 years out of the ring and when he eventually came back, he eyed the UFC. His first fight upon his return was against Renfro Solomon in December 2020. He won this fight in the first round.

4. His Earned the Second Fastest Submission Victory in Dana White’s Contender Series’ History

Mike’s return fight against Solomon opened the way for him to face off against Shimon Smotritsky. This fight was on Dana White’s Contender Series season 5 and it was going to be a determinant for him to get to the UFC.

Malott proved himself worthy of the spot when he won the match in what is considered the series’ second-fastest submission.

Shimon submitted 36 seconds into the fight after Malott dealt him a guillotine choke. As a result of this, Malott was handed a UFC contract.

5. He Won the Performance of the Night Bonus in 2023

The 33-year-olds first UFC fight was against Mickey Gall on April 9, 2022. The Canadian won the fight and faced Yohan Lainesse next.

He also won the fight against Lianesse in the first round after delivering an arm triangle choke on him. This win earned Mike his very first Performance of the Night title and bonus award.

6. He isn’t the Only Athlete in His Family

Mike Malott isn’t the only athlete in his family. Jeff Malott, his younger brother is an Ice Hockey player who was drafted into the NHL on March 20, 2022.

Additionally, his sister Lauren was also a professional athlete who played Ice Hockey but she now concentrates on training others and other technical and healthy aspects of the sport.

Even Kathryn Malott is also an athlete who’s still pursuing a college career.

7. He Probably Got Married in 2023

An almost all-rounder in MMA, Mike knows Jiu-Jitsu. He even has a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

From his younger days training at the karate gym, he learned a bit of the art and when he became a coach, he also brushed up his skills in jiu-jitsu. No doubt this skill comes in handy during his fights.

9. Mike Malott’s Height, Weight, Reach, and Stance

Proper stands at a height of 6 feet and 1 inch. As a welterweight fighter, he weighs 170 (77kg). With his height, the MMA fighter is able to reach as long as 185 cm (73 inches) which helps him deal long-range blows to his opponents.

Despite being more fluent in the Orthodox fighting style, Malott is no stranger to the Southpaw stance. This ability is also very instrumental because he gets to switch between both stances whenever he chooses.

10. His Life-long Dream was to Fight in the Octagon in Canada

The 6 feet tall Canadian fighter has admitted that his greatest dream has been to fight in the Octagon in his home country.

With his next fight scheduled for June 10, 2023, against Adam Fugitt at UFC 289, he will have this dream come true.

Mike has a reputation for winning 5 matches in 10 minutes and 53 seconds. With his 36 seconds win against Shimon, a lot of people look forward to seeing how this will go.

Could he win the match in seconds as is his wont or will he suffer his second defeat in his professional career?
