Sam Mewis is an American professional football player who plays in the midfield position for the Women’s league club, North Carolina Courage, and is also a full-fledged senior player on the women’s national football team of the United States. Also popular as Samantha Mewis, she is known for her prolific, mesmerizing, and dominating style of play.

Since she got seriously involved in the sport from high school, Sam has garnered numerous awards and recognition for her talents and achievements, including two Parade All-Americans, four NSCAA Youth All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year, Boston Globe Player of the Year, Honda Award, ESPN Women National Player of the Year.

Sam Mewis Biography [Age]

This talented footballer was born Samantha Mewis on October 9, 1992, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. She is the younger of two children born to Melissa and Robert Mewis. Her sister, Katie is also a gifted football player, currently playing for the Houston Dash, and has appeared alongside Sam on the national women’s team. Sam is currently 32 years old.

She completed her early education Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, where she played football with the school’s squad and racked up 34 assists and 77 goals. Sam spent her early years playing for several local youth teams and Scorpions SC football club.

She was a member of the United States U-17 and U-20 national teams. Her spectacular abilities led to her receiving the Parade All-American twice and getting named the NSCAA player of the year in 2010, while still in high school. She also received the honor of being announced as the ESPN RISE All-American that same year.

Sam Mewis went on to UCLA to further her education and continue her playing football. She joined the school team, where she once again excelled in her very first year. However, she had to miss a few games during her sophomore season because of her involvement with the national team, but she managed to get her name on the scoreboards a couple times before the season ended. The following year, she aided UCLA to a Pac-12 championship, followed by an NCAA title.

On the international front, Sam Mewis has represented the U.S. U-17 team, where she made history with her sister as the first sisters to make an appearance together at the Women’s World Cup. They played side by side again in the U-17. She earned her senior team cap in 2014, making a debut appearance at that year’s Algarve Cup. She has also represented the squad at the She Believes Cup and the CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

She was a part of the US team at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup which the US won. She scored 2 goals and made 3 assists at the tournament.

She is currently representing the United States at the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

Not a lot of players can boast of the kind of stats that Sam has amassed over the course of her career. In her first year at UCLA, she was the second-highest goal scorer with 6 goals and 7 assists. In sophomore year, she put up 3 goals and 3 assists in 16 appearances. The junior year saw Sam net 6 goals, four of which won the game, and an extra 9 assists. In her final year, the midfielder got even better, scoring a total of 16 goals, seven of which were game-winning, and racking up 13 assists.

On the international side of things, Sam has put up 8 goals in 13 outings for the U-17, 8 goals in 33 games for U-20, 1 goal in 3 starts for U-23, 4 goals in the 2016 She Believes Cup, 3 goals and 1 assist in 2017, and 1 goal in 2018 World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

As a club player, she contributed 4 goals and 4 assists for the Flash in 20 appearances for 2015. The following year, she netted 5 goals and gave 2 assists in 14 games. Sam started 25 games in 2017, scoring 6 goals and tallying 3 assists. In 2018, she made 19 appearances resulting in 4 goals and 3 assists.

By the time she left North Carolina Courage in 2020 having played since 2017, she had recorded 11 goals in 53 appearances. With Manchester City which became her next club, she scored 7 goals in 7 appearances before she returned to the Courage in 2021.

Current Teams

Sam Mewis has played for a number of clubs in her professional career. She joined Pali Blues in 2013, helping them to win the western conference title and a national championship before moving on to the Western New York Flash in 2015 after being selected as the fourth overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League draft. While with the club, she won the NSWL Rookie of the Year Award, helped the team qualify for playoffs, and win the NSWL championship title in 2016.

In January 2017, the Flash moved to North Carolina under new ownership and became known as North Carolina Courage. She joined Manchester City in 2020 but was back in North Carolina in 2021. The club retained her and she continues to enjoy successful seasons with them.

In 2018, the American footballer got married to her boyfriend of a long time, Pat Johnson. Sam Mewis and her husband were said to have dated for 6 years before they tied the knot in a simple ceremony in December 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts.

For now, the couple is yet to have a child.
