Sardar Azmoun has had his own fair share of fame ever since he became part of the Iranian national football team. For many reasons including the constant finding of his way into the net, he has been nicknamed Lionel Messi.
Aside from earning himself the title of Iran’s fifth all-time highest goalscorer, he is also the second most expensive player of all time in Iran after Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Currently, Sardar plays professionally for his country Iran, and Zenit St. Petersburg – a Russian Club.
Biography and Career Highlight of Sardar Azmoun
Sardar Azmoun was born into an Islamic family in Gonbad-e Kavus, Iran on January 1, 1995.
As a child, Sardar developed a flair for sports and pattern after his father who has coached a number of volleyball teams and is a former international volleyball player. Despite his early involvement in volleyball, he chose football and would later become an outstanding player.
Since he found his way around football, Sardar played for several teams including Oghab Gonbad, Shamoushak Gorgan, and Etka Gorgan. It was not until he became part of Sepahan Football Club at the age of 15 in 2011 that he started to draw massive attention of several Clubs including European’s Rubin Kazan where he appeared in several matches, scored a number of goals and in 2015 transferred to Rostov; later to Rubin Kazan from 2017-2019 and currently another EUFA Europa League Club Zenit St. Petersburg. In Petersburg, he became the most productive Iranian goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
In 2009, he became part of Iran’s under-17 team where he scored a total number of 7 goals in 6 appearances. Sardar later became one of the football players to make it to Iran’s under-20 team and in 2015 became a key player in the country’s under-23 team.
Throughout his career that has brought him to the limelight, he’s been able to be adorned with several honors including AFF U-19 Youth Championship Cup top scorer, Rostov Player of the Season, Russian Premier League Player of the Month: May 2016 and in March 2019 amid other several awards.
Away from his football life, Sadar has kept his personal life out of the way of the public. Although it is clear he is not married, his relationship status has remained shadowy.

1. Style of play
His style of play has constantly been compared to Zlatan Ibramovic’s and at different occasions Sarder has been referred to the Lionel Messi of Iran. However, Sardar does not believe his pattern of play is in any way Messi’s and does not know why people keep calling him Messi. No matter the belief of the striker, there is no sign the media would stop calling him Messi anytime soon.
2. Sardar Azmoun’s relationship with Berdyev
He has described his former Rubin coach Berdyev as a father. The two men have a good relationship and share a common language – Turkmen.
3. He once announced his International retirement
At the age of 23 following Iran’s knockout in the 2018 World Cup competitions, Sardar Azmoun made known his intentions to retire in June after been heavily criticized. He announced that the criticisms made his mother critically ill and even though he found it extremely difficult to choose, he chose mother over the game.
However, he returned after a few months in October.
4. Interest of several English clubs
Several English sides have reportedly made a move to sign Azmoun including Arsenal who according to several reports offered $2 million pounds in 2014. Currently, a number of clubs in England have shown interest in him including Leicester City, Westham United, and Arsenal.
However, Zenit football club sporting director Javier Ribalta revealed that the £30m-rated was not for sale.

For showing off his tattoos, The Ethics Committee of Iran’s Football Federation had formerly given several warnings to him and other team members.

He’s the first Iranian football player to play for a Russian Club and has since equaled Ali Daei’s record as the top Iranian goalscorer in EUFA Club football
7. He is Iran’s fifth highest goalscorer
At only 25, Sardar Azmoun has made 50 appearances for the Iranian senior national team. In the process, he has scored 32 goals, making him the highest scorer for the country ahead of Karim Ansarifard who saw the back of the net 26 times after 81 appearances, Mehdi Taremi with 21 goals in 45 appearances, and Kaveh Rezaei who scored a goal in 12 appearances.
