Despite the hardships, Shakur Stevenson parents could not have been prouder of their son. Born with Puerto-Rican blood, the famous 28 year old is an American professional boxer and was raised by a large family.
Shakur Stevenson has been involved in about 17 matches and has won 17 times. He has a medal record in the Men’s amateur boxing where he represented the United States of America.
Due to his rise to fame succeeding in his amateur career in 2014 and the subsequent pro career in 2017, Shakur and indeed his whole family have become persons of interest to the media.
He has spoken quite often and fondly of his roots and family but not so much is known about these people he speaks of.

Malikah Stevenson is the name of the mother of the Double Weight Classes World Champion. He was born to her on June 28, 1997, in Newark, New Jersey, United States of America. Malikah conceived her first son, Shakur from a relationship she had with a Puerto Rican. However, the real father of her son absconded from her life and almost made her a single mother. 6 months into the pregnancy, Shahid Guyton, a native of Oakland came into her life and remained with her ever since.
Shahid went on to adopt Shakur after his birth and marriage to his mother. Malikah and her husband named their first child Ash-Shakur Nafi Shahid Stevenson. He was named after the famous rapper, Tupac Shakur who was killed about 9 months before his birth.
The reason Shakur’s mother named him after the rap artist was because she was a huge fan of Tupac at the time. Similarly, she was said to have been his friend and had some sort of close relationship with the deceased rapper.
As earlier stated, Stevenson was raised by an extended family as he lived with his parents and grandparents, and even cousins, sometimes. However, from when he was a year old, he began to spend more time with Shahid Guyton as Mrs. Stevenson had to get back to work. From then, the two developed a bond.
After the birth of her first child, Mrs. Shahid Stevenson went on to have 8 more kids with her husband, Guyton. Additionally, Shahid and Malikah are grandparents to a lovely girl. Shakur and his girlfriend known as Michelle welcomed a baby girl on December 7, 2021. The name of Shakur Stevenson parent’s granddaughter is Leilani Asha Stevenson.

As earlier stated, Guyton and Shakur developed a strong bond when the boxer was still quite young. The boxer’s step-father who had lived all his life in Oakland even had to move ‘Philly’, the short of Philadelphia because of Nafi Shahid.
Due to the closeness of the two Shahid men, one would not even guess that they are not biologically tied. Nonetheless, with the Newark-born’s fame, Guyton got to achieve quite a lot.
Guyton Shahid was, prior to and even while married to Malikah, not very educated. He hadn’t even a high school diploma. However, upon the elevation of their status due to the boxer’s career, Shahid was able to return to school, got a GED, attended college, and even got a job.
Apart from being Shakur’s parent, he used to double as a ticket agent, with his wife, and also he was one of the athlete’s biggest fans. Now, thanks to a decision he made in 1997, he enjoys the perks of being related to a worldwide celebrated boxer.
Among Shakur Stevenson Parent’s, he Shares Unique Similarities with his Mother
Shakur Stevenson parent boasts about having unique similarities with the first of her kids. She states that amongst her 9 kids, her love-child with a Puerto Rican is the one who relates with her more.
Drawing a stance from how hardworking she has always been, Malikah states that Shakur is just like her. She remembers how he would come back from school and still head out to the gym to train in order to get to where he currently is.
She reiterates, whenever she has the opportunity, how proud she is of her son. The Stevenson son not only works hard, but he is also a family-oriented person just like his mother.
Nafi Shahid never forgets his roots and even admits to working so hard in order to provide the very best for his family. Ash-Shakur’s greatest motivation is his family as he hopes to completely elevate them from the standard he was born into.
This love was further demonstrated when he solicited help to get some members of his family to the 2016 Olympic games. Having his family by his side during the competition meant so much to him and so he sought to have them in Rio.
For this cause, a fundraiser was established and it had people contribute to the cause. This just goes to show how much he is close to his family and this is a trait his mother has as well.

Did you know that Shakur Stevenson’s Grandfather coached him?
When Stevenson was still a child, he had a great love for sports and was mostly drawn to baseball. Shakur grew up on Muhammed Ali Boulevard in Newark where he learned to play different sports.
The Rio Olympic Silver Medalist learned to play basketball in addition to baseball. However, he was destined for a different path as his calling was to be a boxer, and had a passion for that.
His grandfather was the first of the Stevenson family to notice this love for boxing. This may have been a result of the fact that Moses Wali, Shakur’s grandfather was into boxing and had trained over a hundred boxers prior. Wali also ran a gym in Newark where his grandson practiced boxing.
Mother and grandfather remember seeing young Shakur shadow boxing even in his sleep. He would shadow box and pretend to be in a ring at all times and this informed the family members of what would become of their beloved son.
As soon as Shakur was 5 years old, Moses began to train and coach him. He got all the necessary props for the young man and registered him in a gym. It did not take so long, the boxer began to make his own decisions and did not need his granddad’s push to practice.
On his own, the two-time Featherweight Champion began to train without the watchful eyes of his Wali. Moses however remained his coach for quite a while even after getting other forms of training and coaching.
