An incredibly talented athlete, Sophie Schmidt is a soccer player who plays for the Canada women’s national soccer team which she has represented at many major tournaments around the world including two Olympics where she won the bronze medal. She also plays for Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League.

A midfielder, Schmidt started her career in 2005 and has, since then, played for various clubs including Vancouver Whitecaps and FFC Frankfurt while also playing for Canada at different levels.

Sophie Schmidt Biography

The star Canadian footballer was born Sophie Diana Schmidt on June 28, 1988, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. However, it was in Abbotsford, British Columbia, that she was brought up by her parents Elmer and Cornelia Schmidt. Even though Sophie is clearly a Canadian woman, it is noteworthy that she also has Paraguayan roots. This is because both her father and mother were born in Paraguay.

Raised alongside her brothers Spencer and Bruce, she fell in love with football early and started playing at the age of 8.  Although she was a shy kid when she was growing up, all she ever wanted doing, was to do exactly what her brother was doing. As it happened, soccer was what he was playing and so she also wanted to play soccer. Apart from soccer, she was also talented in basketball and she played the sport when she was in high school.

She was brought up in a Christian family with a mother who has evangelized in different parts of the world for many years. Thanks to this, Sophie has always provided the Christian presence on the Canadian team which she came to play for.

For her education, she went to the University of Portland where she played for the Portland Pilots. She did not start playing for the varsity team in her first year because of her national commitment and so she got to play from 2007 to 2009, missing 2006.

Soccer Career

Sophie Schmidt began her youth career in 2004 with the Abbotsford Rush. In 2005, she got the opportunity of starting her senior career with the Vancouver Whitecaps. She was there for the next five years in which she made 39 appearances scoring 6 goals in the process.

In 2011, she moved to magicJack where she only appeared in 11 games and netted a goal before she moved to Sweden where she for Kristianstads DFF for a short while before she moved again to  Sky Blue FC where she played from 2013 to 2014, and then from 2015 to 2018 was in Germany with FFC Frankfurt. In 2019, she made her move to Houston Dash for which she still plays.

Sophie Schmidt started her international career at the age of 16 when she was called upon in 2004 to play for the Canada under-17 team. In the same year, she got the call to fly the Canadian flag at the under-20 level, something she did until 2008 By the end of her career at the level, she had already made 28 appearances and had netted 3 goals in the process.

In 2005, she started her career with the senior team and by the build-up to the 2019 FIFA World Cup, she had already appeared for the team 184 times scoring 19 goals in the process. Schmidt represented the country at the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio 2016 Olympics where she won the bronze medal.

Among other things she has won are CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in 2008, CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup in 2010, Pan American Games 2011 and the Cyprus Cup in 2008 and 2011.

The Canadian footballer is from a closely knitted family that has her parents and two siblings. She has always had the support of her family all through her journey as a footballer.

As regards her love life, she is not yet married but Sophie Schmidt is in a relationship with musician and actor Nic Kyle. The two have been together for quite some time and in 2017, they got engaged. The two always share their pictures together on social media.
