Stan Savran, who spent nearly five decades in sports broadcasting, chronicling Pittsburgh’s rise to the “City of Champions,” died at the age of 76. Before his death, Stan had several health issues. He revealed in 2022 that he was battling lung cancer. More so, Stan’s right foot was amputated on April 19, 2023, 2 months before he passed on.

Savran passed away on June 12, 2023, as earlier stated. His death was announced on  WTAE-TV, where he had been a sports anchor throughout the 1980s. Although no official cause of death was declared, Savran’s fight with cancer may have contributed to his passing. Meanwhile, pennlive.com has also reported that Savran has experienced various heart procedures.

He Made His Career Debut in the Early 70s

After completing his studies at Oxford, Ohio’s Miami University, Savran made his entertainment career debut. His stops included Columbus, Lawton, OK, and Orlando, FL. He later arrived in Pittsburgh in January 1976 after answering a “blind” ad in Broadcasting magazine’s classifieds for a radio sportscaster.

His first on-air job in Pittsburgh was at WWSW-AM. When WWSW changed formats in 1979, he moved to KQV. He covered sports regularly for WTAE-TV from 1981 to 1991, working both from the news desk and on the field. On WTAE Radio, now WPGP, he also presented a chat show from 8 to 9 o’clock. In retrospect, a local newspaper columnist referred to the time period between Savran’s show and Myron Cope’s show in the 6–8 pm time period as “the Golden Era of Pittsburgh Sports Talk” because of the acclaim Savran received for his tolerance, expertise, and manner. After a disagreement with management, Savran moved to KBL/Fox Sports Net.

Moving on. the American-born sports entertainer contributed weekly sports columns to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the city’s major newspaper, from 2000 to 2004. Savran remained a sports anchor for WTAE-TV and WPGH-TV, both in Pittsburgh. He also continued to host intermission segments on Pittsburgh Penguins broadcasts when the games were on WPGH.
