Steve Kerr is a renowned coach in the NBA who began his career in sports as a basketball player before retiring to become a coach. He is the first head coach in the history of the NBA to have his team win more than 67 times in three consecutive seasons. He has a long list of achievements throughout his playing career as well as his coaching career.

He is not only active in sports but also in societal issues. He has also worked as a broadcast analyst and also the general manager for the Phoenix Suns. Steve Kerr has been married to his college sweetheart Margot Brennan for over three decades now and they have three children: Nick, Maddy, and Matthew.

Who is Steve Kerr?

The basketball coach was born in Beirut, Lebanon on September 27, 1965, to his parents, Malcolm H. Kerr and Ann Zwicker Kerr. His father, Malcolm H. Kerr was an American academic who specialized in the Middle East.  His parents met while they were both studying at the American University of Beirut. His grandfather was a volunteer in the Near East Relief after the Armenian genocide. Steve Kerr was raised in Beirut together with his three siblings.

He attended Cairo American College in Egypt, then the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon, and also Palisades High School in Los Angeles. He graduated from high school in 1983. He later obtained a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the University of Arizona in 1988. His majors were history, sociology, and English.

As of 2020, Steve Kerr has an estimated net worth of $35 million. Kerr earned a total of $15.8 million during his time in the NBA playing career. His highest pay was during his final season in 2002-2003 where he earned up to $2.625 million. Among his numerous assets, is the real estate Kerr acquired in San Francisco in August 2018. That property alone cost him about $7. 35 million.

According to reports, Steve Kerr currently earns a salary of almost $5 million. After he became a coach, he signed a five-year contract of $25 million with the warriors in 2014. The deal was extended to July 2018. And it was renewable every season.

Kerr began his NBA career after he was selected and drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1988. The following year, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He spent over three seasons with the Cavaliers before he departed to the Orlando Magic.

The Chicago Bulls signed his 1993 and he played a key part when the Bulls won the 1997 NBA finals against Utah Jazz. Then in 1999, he was acquired by the San Antonio Spurs he became the second player to win four consecutive NBA titles and he made history alongside side Frank Saul who had also had straight-four wins.

After a while, Kerr was traded to Portland Trail Blazers in 2001 and he played 65 games during the 2001-2002 season. He was later traded back to Spurs in 2002. During his time there he played all the game and even helped remove Dallas which led the team to win the NBA championship by beating the New Jersey Nets in the 2003 NBA finals.

Steven Kerr retired after the 2003 NBA finals. He has a record of playing 910 regular-season games during his NBA career. After his long career in the NBA, he became a broadcast analyst for Turner Network Television. During that time, he also contributed to Yahoo! as an NBA commentator.

He began his coaching career in 2014 after reaching an agreement with the golden state warriors. He has been coaching the Warriors for close to 7 years now and he has had remarkable achievements.

1. Steve Kerr’s Father Was Killed By The Shia Lebanese Militia

During an attack in 1984, Kerr’s father was killed by members of the Shia Lebanese militia called Islamic jihad. Malcolm H. Kerr was killed on the morning of January 18, 1984, at the age of 52. He died while he was serving as the president of the American University of Beirut. Steve Kerr was only 18 years old at that time.

2. He Is A Strong Supporter Of Gun Control

Kerr shared his concerns with the government regarding school shootings. He has always been a strong supporter of gun control. Aside from that, he is also a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement.

3. Steve Kerr Endorsed Joe Biden For President

Kerr shared in a video with the Lincoln project how people needed to stand for ‘truth over lies’ and ‘reject white supremacy’ He endorsed the current president of the United States, Joe Biden for president in October 2020. Steven Kerr was very vocal about his opinion and was critical of the former president of the USA, Donald Trump. He shared how he was disappointed with president trump’s leadership at that time.

Kerr has a long list of awards and recognition in the sports world. As a player, he was 5 times NBA champion from 1996-1999 and 2003. He was also a twice first-team All Pac-10 in 1986 and 1988. And as a coach, he was the NBA Coach of the Year(2016) and also twice NBA All-star game head coach (2015,2017).
