Biography of Tim Legler

It was as Timothy Eugene Legler that the former basketball player was born on December 26, 1966, in Washington D.C. He was brought up Virginia playing baseball because his father was a baseball coach. He also played basketball, but only got to start playing it in an organized manner after he got to high school.

For his education, Legler went to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Richmond, Virginia. Before then, he attended John Randolph Tucker High School in Henrico County, also in Virginia. From 1984 to 1988, he went to La Salle University where he played for the college team.

Although he achieved quite much when he played for La Salle, Legler did not get selected in the draft and so he started his career playing in the minor league for the Rochester (Minn.) Flyers for the 1988-89 Continental Basketball Association season.

From 1989 to 2000, he got the chance to play as a shooting guard in the NBA for teams such as Washington Bullets (Washington Wizards) for which he is mostly remembered. He spent his last season with the Golden State Warriors before he retired in 2000.

1. Tim could have been a professional baseball player if he had wanted

Although his name would always be associated with basketball, Tim Legler was also great at baseball and almost took it as a career. He played the sport for the Tigers and during his senior year at third base, he was named most valuable defensive player. He was later offered a contract with baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates to play as an infielder but he turned it down because basketball was his first love. More so, being drafted right after high school, he revealed that the minor league had no appeal to him.

According to him, his best sport was baseball as a little child and not basketball, even though he loved the latter more.

2. He almost missed his greatest NBA moment

In 1996, Tim was torn between being by his wife for the birth of his first child or fly to San Antonio to participate in the three-point shootout during All-Star Weekend in 1996. He wanted to be with his wife but Jennifer insisted there was no way he could miss the game. After a consultation with the doctor, it was decided that a labor would be induced before the due date and so he was there to welcome his first child, Lauren Nicole and still take part in the life-changing game.

3. His two children also play basketball

For someone whose life is all about basketball, it is not surprising that his daughter, Lauren Legler has also chosen to play the sport. She played for Middle Township high school before later playing until 2018 for the Neumann University. She recorded more than 1,000th career points for the college.

In the same manner, his son Ryan Legler also plays basketball.

4. His height contributed to his choice of basketball over baseball

For someone who grew up playing baseball before basketball, Tim had the belief that one day, he would land a place in the  Major League, but by the time he was an eighth-grader, he was already 6 feet 2. He entered high school a lanky fellow of 6 feet 3, and so he decided to give basketball a shot.

5. Tim Legler was first married to Jennifer Snyder

The former basketball player was once married to Jennifer Snyder Legler, a woman he first met at La Salle University where they both played basketball. She was raised on the beach in Avalon and they tied the knot in 1991 at Maris Stella Church, in Avalon. According to her, she was ready to follow her husband anywhere his career took him, but as soon as he was done, they would return to the shores.

Unfortunately, Tim and Jennifer’s marriage came to an end in 2002, barely more than a decade after their marriage. They were blessed with two kids; Lauren and Ryan.

His wife is Christina Fuller Legler

After his first failed marriage, Tim got married a second time to Christina Fuller Legler who used to be a cheerleader in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles for five years. Currently a cheer coach, Christina is also a black belter and a lover of dogs. While her father is American, her mother is from South Korea and her parents met when her father was stationed there while serving in the US Air Force.

Although they do not have any kids together, they live together with Tim’s kids from his previous marriage, forming a small happy family.

Legler’s life after basketball

After his years of playing basketball came to an end, Tim Legler had the hopes of coaching but it was broadcasting that later attracted him. He decided to become an analyst for ESPN and since then, that has been his job. In 2018, he almost became the head coach of La Salle, but somehow, he later lost the chance to  Ashley Howard.

He obtained a masters degree in business from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Also, he operates the Tim Legler Basketball Camp through which he has continued to develop young talents.

He has a net worth of $2 million

From a successful career as a basketball player and then an analyst, Tim Legler has an estimated net worth of $2 million. The main source of his fortune is from his career as an analyst but he has also made some money from other engagements including businesses.
