Warren Sapp made roughly $40 million throughout his 13 seasons in the NFL. His contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders provided the funds.

The Florida native began his career after being picked in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Three years later, he agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $36 million.

Sapp played nine years with the Bucs, helping them win their first Super Bowl in 2002. In addition, he got $26.7 million, which increased to $39.7 million when a signing bonus and other incentives were factored in.

In 2004, after his contract with the Buccaneers expired, he signed a seven-year, $36.6 million contract with the Oakland Raiders. In his four seasons with the Raiders, he earned a total of $10.7 million. Similarly, after the signing bonus and other incentives were added, the total increased to $19.2 million.

How Sapp Blew His Money

Sapp declared bankruptcy in 2012 after earning over $40 million between 1995 and 2004. His assets were appraised at $6.45 million, while his debt was increased to $6.7 million.

The 52-year-old claimed in the complaint that he had lost the University of Miami championship and Super Bowl rings. At the time, the balance in his savings accounts was allegedly less than $1,000.

His extravagant lifestyle, tax avoidance, and alleged reluctance to pay child support to his ex-wife Jamiko Vaughn all contributed to his downfall.

Sapp Paid Fines For Bad Behavior During His NFL Career

While the former defensive tackle was still active, he was punished on multiple occasions for inappropriate behavior. He was fined $50,000 in 2003 for running into an NFL official before a game with the Washington Redskins. In addition, the NFL fined him $75,000 in 2007 after an altercation with game officials during which he was expelled after three unsportsmanlike behavior penalties.

His Expensive Lifestyle

The pro football Hall of Famer was notorious for living a lavish lifestyle, which further diminished his money. He possessed nearly $6,000 in Jordan sneakers, a $2,250 Rolex, and a $1,200 lion leather rug with a painting of a naked woman.

He Evaded Tax Payments

Warren owed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) $853,003 from his 2006 earnings and $89,775 from his 2010 earnings when he filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Furthermore, he owed $68,738 and $90,685 in property taxes for Windermere, Orange County, Florida, and National Car Rental, respectively.

Warren Failed To Pay Alimony/Child Support To Ex-Wife Jamiko Vaughn

Warren Sapp married Jamiko Vaughn in January 1998 and divorced in 2003, after having two children, Mercedes and Warren. According to reports, he paid his ex-wife alimony and child support four times; $16,000, $25,000, $25,000, and $9,000, but he was still left with $876,000 to settle.

The Hall Of Famer Sold His Luxury Mansion In Florida

Warren sold his 10,000-square-foot home in Windermere, Orange County, Florida, to fitness enthusiast Brenda Dykgraaf for $2.9 million in 2012. The home cost $7 million to build in 2005. So, selling it at that price cost him $4.1 million.
