Wendie Renard was born Wendie Thérèse Renard on July 20, 1990, in Schœlcher, a town in Martinique, France.
She is the youngest of her parent’s four daughters. Wendi became rather obsessed with football from a tender age and was greatly inspired by Ronaldinho’s style of play, and she always wished to be able to play as good he did.
From school, she would follow the boys to the beach to swim and play football. However, she was encouraged in her football career by her sisters, and aunt who is also a referee, in Martinique.
Unfortunately, at the age of eight, Wendie lost her Dad whom she was very close to. He was diagnosed with lung cancer which later claimed him. From then on, she was raised by her widow Mum.
The tragedy propelled Wendie into being more resolute in her quest to make a career out of football to complement the efforts of her mum.

Wendi built her career in football starting from her home town in Martinique. She joined the Essor-Préchotain club there, until around 2006 when she moved ahead to join Lyon, which was a dream come true for her.
While at Lyon, her performance was outstanding and unbeatable. Her central defending skills have led Lyon into winning dozens of trophies that her club’s name became synonymous with winners.
From 2006 when she came in until 2011, she helped Lyon to remain unbeatable for over a decade as the club under the Division 1 Féminine has won 11 trophies.
While under Coupe de France, her team Lyon still clung 7 titles winning streak. Under the UEFA Women’s Champions League, she won the league title 4 times back-to-back with the team.
Not forgetting that she also won the International Women’s Club Championship in 2012 as well as the Valais Women’s Cup tournament in 2014.
International Career
At the international level, Wendie has been at the forefront of leading the France Women’s national team as their captain. She made her international debut during the 2011 Cyprus Cup match against Switzerland.
Subsequently, her leadership roles and her on-pitch skills helped France to win the Cyprus Cup twice in 2012, and 2014. She has also recorded a trophy for France during the SheBelieves Cup of 2017 as well as featuring in two Olympics.
At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, she netted two goals to help the French team beat Korea 4 goals to nothing in the first game of the tournament. She also had a goal against Nigeria before registering a goal against the United States although that was not enough to see them go beyond the quarter-final stage as they were defeated by 2 goals to 1.
On a personal level, Wendie was named as part of the UEFA Women’s Championship All-Star Team that was in 2013 again she was among the FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Team in 2015 alongside being named among the FIFA Women’s World Cup Dream Team still in 2015 and the FIFPro FIFA World XI of 2015 and 2016 respectively.
