Born on August 28, 1998, in Fort Lewis, Washington, Weston James Earl McKennie popularly known as Weston McKennie is an American Professional Soccer player. He started by playing American Football, However, due to the nature of his father’s job, Weston moved from one location to the other. During one of those moves to Germany, he did not find any league that was appropriate for his age, so he decided to try soccer.
He was then introduced to the coach of FC Phonix Otterbach by his mother, at the age of 6. After playing for the club for about 3 years, his family moved back to the United States, and the young Weston went back to his first love, American football. He played as a halfback.
However, soccer still remained a part of him, and his mom would drive him to the soccer field to play on weekends. There he always scored a goal or 2. He was excelling in both sports but he needed to choose one, which led him to choose soccer. The young footballer was then signed to play for the youth wing of FC Dallas, where he played for 7 years, between 2009 to 2016.
2. The American Soccer Player Turned Down a Scholarship
In 2016, Weston was offered a scholarship by the University of Virginia to play for the Virginia Cavaliers. He went on to sign the National Letter of Intent. Subsequently, he turned down the scholarship offer and sought to go professional.
Similarly, he turned down an offer to sign a homegrown player contract with FC Dallas, in 2016 and moved to Europe.
3. He Turned Professional at the Age of 18
In 2016, after turning down the contract from Dallas FC, Weston signed with FC Schalke 04, a side of the German club, Bundesliga. After spending less than a year in Schalke’s academy team, he was promoted to the first team squad in 2017. Subsequently, he made his debut in May of the same year. Later in 2017, the young soccer player signed a 5-year contract with the Bundesliga team.
Subsequently, in 2021, he joined the Serie A club, Juventus on a year-long loan, and later became permanent, in March of the same year. He became the first Juventus player and the 5th Serie A player from the United States.
4. The 28 -year-old Plays Multiple Positions
At the Bundesliga club, Weston proved how much of a versatile player he was by playing different positions. He played a wide range of positions during his time at Schalke ranging from defensive midfielder to attacking midfielder, central defender, and striker.
In an interview, Weston revealed that he did not have a preferred position, however, he doesn’t know how to play just a position. He added that although he doesn’t score or assist often, he feels he is good at connecting plays and he is sure the defenses are aware of his presence.

The American midfielder has played for the United States U-17 and U-20 teams. He then earned a place in the National Senior Team ahead of the friendly match with Portugal in November, where he scored a goal on his very first match.
In June 2019, he assisted a goal for the team in a match against Jamaica. Similarly, he scored the fastest hat-trick goal in the U.S. men’s National Team’s history. This was after he scored 3 goals in 13 minutes during the CONCACAF Nations League, against Cuba.
