Yamileth Mercado is a Mexican boxer that is currently ranked among the best active female boxers in the Bantamweight division. Her rise to the top is due to her hard work and dedication.

 Yamileth Mercado’s Early Life and Age

She was born Almendra Yamileth Mercado Duarte on March 16 1998 in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. La Yeimi is her favorite nickname among fans and followers. The Mexican boxer is currently 27 years old .

Her life started in Mexico where she was born and grew up. Yamileth’s early education and who her parents are is not well known. However, her life after she debuted as a professional boxer shows an interesting life of a hardworking athlete.

She also attended the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez.

Unlike her pronounced, the professional boxer has been lip-tight regarding her personal life. Even her social media handle does not say anything about her love life but her successful career in boxing.

Yamileth made her professional debut in 2014 at the Gimnasio Municipal Nuevo Casas Grandes, Mexico. She fought against Yoatzin Meraz. Her stake as the winner in the first round firmly placed her as a serious boxer. That match set a foundation for the then sixteen-year-old Yamileth’s fight with other superstars.

In 2015 alone, she won three technical knockouts to secure her victory against Karla Valenzuela. Her stake as the winner in an eight-round unanimous decision match against Lesly Morales added to her number of wins.

She continued to make a good impression in boxing as she had two wins over Diana Guiterrez in 2016. However, she suffered her first professional defeat via UD over ten rounds on March 3 2017 at the Gimnasio Municipal in Nuevo Casas Grandes. The judges reportedly scored the bout in favor of Munoz.

In 2018, she competed four times and secured UD wins over Marisol Corona in January that year. Her last fight for that was for a world title against the reigning WBC female super bantamweight champion Fatuma Zarika in Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Centre. She, unfortunately, lost through a split decision that favored Zarika.

During a rematch on November 16, 2018, Mercado captured the WBC super bantamweight title via UD over ten rounds.

Yamileth faced off with Amanda Serrano is one of the most iconic matches ever in 2021. She challenged Amanda’s championships. Having given a close match to Amanda, she lost through a Unanimous decision.7

Ever since she debuted in 2014, Yamileth contended fights in the cage. Presently, she has 21 fights to her name. She won 18 of these fights.

1. The Bantamweight Champion Trained as a Nurse

In 2019, Yamileth accepted an honor wearing a nurse’s uniform. It revealed the fact that she was training as a nurse at the time. At the moment, she is focusing on her career as a professional boxer.

2. The Chihuahuan Was Attacked by Amanda Serrano’s Trainer

Despite losing the match to Serrano who defended her title, Yamileth was attacked by Serrano’s trainer, Jordan Maldonado.

He started the attack right before the match started and continued even after the match ended. Maldonado challenged her style of fighting which he termed un-Mexican-like. Serrano echoed the same words in an interview with SecondsOut.

The Bantamweight champion and her team felt threatened and were unable to grant a post-fight interview. Mercado insisted on the official body sanctioning Maldona for his actions towards her.

3. Yamileth Mercado Is the Sports Ambassador for Her Hometown

One of the greatest victories of her career is winning the WBC title in the Bantamweight category in 2019. She won a ten-round bout with the judges awarding her the vacant WBC international title.

Her 2019 title win against Alys Perez of Venezuela attracted a lot of attention to her. The Cuauhtemoc municipal government decided to honor her by giving her financial support. Also, a new gym was to be named after her.

She was named sports ambassador in her hometown of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua after winning the bantamweight title of the WBC.

4. How Does She Make Her Net Worth?

Since she started boxing professionally in 2014, Yamileth earns her net worth from her professional career as a boxer. Though she is in the upper categories of superstars, the champion has not revealed her net worth.

Many sources speculate her net worth to be over $1 million with a yearly compensation of over $80,000. Her earnings are sure to multiply in the years ahead at the pace she is going.

5. She Is the First Chihuahuan To Be Crowned World Champion

Aside from being the super bantamweight world champion of the world boxing council, Mercado has also won the International Super Bantamweight Champion of the World Boxing Council. She made history as the first female Chihuahuan boxer to be crowned world champion.
