Homer Carroll Jones, a former NFL wide receiver and a professional football player, has passed away. He pioneered the touchdown spike celebration, was one of the finest players in the history of the NFL, played for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, with 224 receptions for 4,986 yards on an average of 22.3 yards per catch, and scored 38 touchdowns. He battled lung cancer until he passed away at 82 on June 14, 2023.

Homer Jones was born in Pittsburg, Texas, on February 18, 1914. He was the only child of a steelworker and a teacher.
He went to Frederick Douglass High School in Pittsburg, where he excelled at high school football. He earned scholarship offers from nine universities but chose to play for Texas Southern College (now Texas Southern University) from 1959 to 1962.
In 1963, he was drafted by the Houston Oilers but was released due to a knee injury sustained during training. He then signed with the New York Giants, where he remained until 1970 when he was traded to the Cleveland Browns.
After six years in the NFL, he retired on July 24, 1971, at the age of 29. During those years, and even now, he retains the NFL record for averaging 22.3 yards per reception, with the fifth-most receiving yards (4,986).
Jones also devised the spike, a play in which the player instantly throws the ball to the ground following the snap.

He Died After A Battle With Lung Cancer
Homer Jones, also known as “The Spike,” died on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 82, after a battle with lung cancer. According to KLTV, the news was confirmed by the daughter of retired NFL legend Lacarroll Jones Nickelberry.
It is unknown how long Jones fought the cancer before succumbing to it at the time of writing.
Jone Is Survived By Six Children
