Homer Jones Hailed From Pittsburg, Texas

Homer Jones was born in Pittsburg, Texas, on February 18, 1914. He was the only child of a steelworker and a teacher.

He went to Frederick Douglass High School in Pittsburg, where he excelled at high school football. He earned scholarship offers from nine universities but chose to play for Texas Southern College (now Texas Southern University) from 1959 to 1962.

In 1963, he was drafted by the Houston Oilers but was released due to a knee injury sustained during training. He then signed with the New York Giants, where he remained until 1970 when he was traded to the Cleveland Browns.

After six years in the NFL, he retired on July 24, 1971, at the age of 29. During those years, and even now, he retains the NFL record for averaging 22.3 yards per reception, with the fifth-most receiving yards (4,986).

Jones also devised the spike, a play in which the player instantly throws the ball to the ground following the snap.
