Alexandra Popp is a football player from Germany who has gained fame and recognition for the years she has spent competing in the women’s Bundesliga for her current club, VfL Wolfsburg, in the striker position. She has obtained an Olympic gold medal for representing her country at the prestigious tournament and has established herself as one of the most consistent and versatile players on Germany’s national football squad.

Alexandra has offered her services to other prestigious clubs over the course of her career such as 1. FFC Recklinghausen and FCR 2001 Duisburg. Her skills and performances have won her several honors including two German Footballer of the Year awards which she received in 2014 and 2016.

Alexandra Popp Biography 

This soccer star began showing her excellent abilities from a very young age, finding the net many times for her various clubs and country, which has led both to win many titles over the years. Alexandra Popp has claimed the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy thrice, first with FCR 2001 Duisburg and twice more with VfL Wolfsburg. She is also a four-time Bundesliga champion with the latter club, and a six-time DFB Pokal champion, four of which were won in successive seasons.  

The FIFA Golden Shoe winning striker was born on April 6, 1991, in Witten, Germany. She discovered her love for football early and enrolled at the Gesamtschule Berger Feld in Gelsenkirchen, a reputable football academy that is regarded by the DFB to be one of only four elite schools of football that have been certified as such.

Alexandra Popp was the only female pupil in the school and she was able to attend because she was accorded a special permit. While there, she trained and studied with junior players from major clubs across the country. She graduated with a Fachabitur diploma upon finishing 12th grade. Alexandra then went on to intern with a physiotherapist, and she is on the verge of completing a three-year apprentice program that would qualify her to become a zookeeper at the Tierpark Essehof in Lehre.

Soccer Career 

Alexandra Popp kicked off her club career playing for FC Silchede, before joining 1.FFC Recklinghausen. After a while, she was courted by Olympique Lyonnais as well as the German club FCR 2001 Duisburg, but she decided to sign with the latter in 2008. Alexandra’s first Bundesliga appearance was in the game with Herforder SV in September 2008. Her first set of goals came a few weeks down the road in Duisburg’s 8-0 victory against TSV Crailsheim. She went on to win the UEFA Women’s Cup and German Cup in her debut year, earning the 2009 Fritz Walter silver medal for being the runner-up for Best Junior Player.

The following year, she carried off the German Cup once more, while losing out in the Bundesliga final.

 Moving on to her international career, Alexandra claimed her first trophy with Germany in the 2008 UEFA U-17 Women’s Championship. She was responsible for scoring the title-winning goal and was given the Golden Player award for her performance. Popp went on to lead her team to a third-place finish at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Later on, she was offered a place on the senior team and consequently made her first appearance in the friendly game with North Korea. Alexandra scored her first brace in the coming weeks in a 7-0 victory against Finland at the 2010 Algarve Cup. 

She competed as part of Germany’s junior team at the U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2010, winning the title and earning Top Goalscorer and Best Player honors. Alexandra Popp was certified the brightest star in the tournament because she managed to get on the score sheet in every game. She also stood in for her country at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and later on, joined the squad that helped Germany take possession of the gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in 2016.
