He was born Andre Previn Rison on the 18th day of March 1967 in Flint, Michigan, the United States of America. The 58 year-old had his high school education at Flint Northwestern High School in Flint and attended Michigan State University where he played collegiate football.

Rison’s professional NFL career started after he was selected in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. After catching 52 passes for 820 yards with 4 touchdown receptions rookie season, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in April 1990. He spent four years with the Falcons during which he became the only 5th Receiver in NFL’s history to score 60 touchdowns in his first season. Similarly, he was also the second player with the most receptions in six seasons.

2. He Played Collegiate at Michigan State University

After high school, he proceeded to Michigan State University on a scholarship where he played collegiate football. Rison is one of the school’s alumni to find success in the NFL. Others in this rank include Brad Van Pelt, Bubba Smith, Carl Smith the coach for the Seattle Seahawks, and many other top NFL players.

3. Andre Rison was Drafted into the NFL in 1989

Rison’s professional NFL career started after he was selected in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. His rookie season with the team was marked by 52 passes for 820 yards with 4 touchdown receptions. His stay with the team was short-lived as he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons the following year, in April 1990.

He spent four years with the Falcons during which he became the only 5th Receiver in NFL’s history to score 60 touchdowns in his first season. Similarly, he was also the second player with the most receptions in six seasons.

At the end of the 1994 NFL season, he became a free agent and signed a big contract with the Cleveland Browns. His time with the Browns wasn’t so great as his constant feud with fans spoiled it, occasioned by the team’s announcement of relocation to Baltimore. However, the wide receiver didn’t move with the team to Baltimore as he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in1996.

The Jaguars released him following an altercation with his teammate Mark Brunell. And the Green Bay Packers claimed him off of waivers in November 1996, and the remaining five games of the season.

Before the start of the 1997 season, the Flint native signed with the Kansas City Chiefs where he played from 1997 to 1999. In 2000, he joined the Oakland Raiders which became the seventh and last team of his NFL career.

In August 2004, he switched to the Canadian Football League and joined Toronto Argonauts, where he won the 92nd Grey Cup championship. Argonauts released him the following year, bringing an end to his football career.

4. He Won the Grey Cup with his Last Team

The former player last played for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and was instrumental in their winning the Grey Cup in 2004. Interestingly, his team won the cup shortly before his retirement.

5. Andre Rison Took to Coaching after Retirement

Another career opened for Bison two years after his retirement. He started a coaching career for  High schools. First, he became the assistant coach at Beecher High School in Flint, Michigan from 2006 to 2008. His position changed when he was made the head coach for Flint Northwestern High School’s football team in 2010.

After spending another two years with the team, the former wide receiver left his coaching job in 2012 at Flint Northwestern to round his degree at Michigan State University and also join the school’s football team as an assistant coach.

He later became the offensive coordinator at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2014. This gave him the rare opportunity of coaching his own son, Hunter Rison.

6. The Flint native Appeared in an ESPN 2012 documentary

Rison appeared in a documentary film on how former professional athletes squandered their wealth. The ESPN 30-30 documentary Broke was directed and written by Billy Corben of Rakontur.

The documentary was featured at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival as part of its TFF/ESPN Sports Festival.

7. His son Hunter was Charged with Battery in 2019

Rison has a son Hunter Rison from a previous relationship with Racquel Banks. His son is taking after him by pursuing a football career. He started his career at Michigan State University in 2017before transferring to Kansas State University in 2018.

Unfortunately, he was involved in a battery charge case against a girl in June 2019 which effectively led to his probation from playing for the team.

Despite accepting the charges against him, he was still not allowed to be a part of the team. However, he agreed to attend a junior college team at Fullerton College in 2020. As of 2021, he is playing for Grand Valley State University.

8. He has one of the Best Nicknames in Sports History

Given Rison’s temperamental nature, it wasn’t long before he started getting nicknames that fit into different occasions. The first was ‘Bad Moon’ Rison, which came from ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman from the song Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

The second nickname he got was during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, ‘Spider-Man’. He adopted the moniker to help boost his public image. Notably, whenever he scores a touchdown, Rison would fake shooting a web-like Spider-Man.

Bleacher Report named Spider-Man one of the best nicknames in sports history.

9. He had an Abusive Relationship with Lisa Lopes in the Past

Andre Rison And Lisa LopesLong before Rison met his current wife, he had a power relationship with ‘Left Eyes’, a member of the TLC girl group. They two likely met in 1993  and they were together in an off-again-on-again relationship for some years.

Within that time, the relationship was on and off for eight years and was filled with allegations of abuse. They made the headlines in 1994 when Left Eyes torched Rison’s sneakers and it eventually led to the burning of his house. Her excuse for burning the sneakers was because Rison did not get her a pair. Both were drunk and in the heat of the argument, Rison left yet, Left Eye set the sneakers on fire in the bathtub.

Left Eye was arrested, charged with a felony, and sentenced to 5 years of probation and a $10, 000 fine.

The pair split after the incident but resumed the relationship in 2001, and even announced their engagement, with plans of a wedding. However, the wedding rumor was later debunked as untrue. Sadly, Lopes lost her life in a tragic motor accident in Honduras in 2002.

10. How did Andre Rison lose $19 Million Net Worth?

The former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver is one of the big money earners of his time in the NFL.  He reportedly made $20 million over his 12-year stint in the NFL across seven teams. Somehow, the star player lost $19 million of his fortune shortly after his retirement.

Going by his financial records in NFL, Rison signed some of the best deals in the league aside from his salary and endorsements. For instance, his five years deal with the Indianapolis Colts was worth $2.68 million, and $5.5 million with the Cleveland Browns in 1995. Similarly, his deal with Jacksonville Jaguars was $6.6 million, and $1.8 million with Kansas City Chiefs.

Shockingly, Rison filed for bankruptcy in 2007 bringing his financial woes to the public eyes. His case was complicated by his inability to pay child support. Many sources claim that the football coach lost millions due to indulgence and flashy lifestyle just like other players that lost theirs.

He once revealed to ESPN in a 2012 documentary how he blew $1 million on jewelry alone. Rison lived the flashy life of competing with other teammates to see who acquires the best automobiles. He is said to have thrown money in $100 bills each time he visited a club instead of $5.

As of 2022, he has an estimated net worth of $250, 000. There is an unimaginable wide gap between what he earned from his career and his present net worth.
