Biography of Arthur Melo
Arthur Melo was born Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo in Goiania, Brazil on August 12, 1996. He probably started kicking a football as soon as he could stand on his own, and as he got older, he continued to learn to play the Samba and Ginga styles of football that has endeared Brazil and Brazilian footballers to the rest of the world.
After Arthur spent the first decade of his life playing recreational football on the streets of the town of Goiania, he was discovered by a scout working for the local football team, Goias – which is a second division team in the professional football league in Brazil.
He joined Goias when he was 12, and continued his development in the team for the next two years. His performances at a junior football tournament in Brazil got him noticed by the Gremio football club and was drafted into their youth club, where he continued his development for the next 5 years.
In 2015, while Felipe Scolari was the team manager of Gremio’s first team, he gave Arthur his promotion to the senior team. Unfortunately for him, he wouldn’t get much playing time in the next two seasons that followed.
In 2017, opportunities opened up for Arthur to feature more in the first team of Gremio. By this time, his game had become more mature and improved tremendously; his passing range and vision, passing accuracy, ball recovery rate and the occasional goal-scoring ability from the midfield helped him to establish himself as a first-team regular in Gremio. Arthur’s talent did not go unnoticed for long as the big teams began making inquiries about him and his services.
In 2018, after several months of watching him play for his club, Football Club Barcelona came calling for Arthur’s services. In March 2018, Arthur’s move to FC Barcelona was made official after a deal worth € 31 million was agreed with Gremio, with € 9 million as add on fees to be paid later based on certain conditions.
He didn’t have to wait too long to get his career in Barcelona, and on his very first league debut, he scored his first goal for his new club against Tottenham Hotspurs FC, even though it was in a pre-season friendly game. Arthur has now become a regular starter for FC Barcelona, and having put in a lot of brilliant performances since he joined the club, he definitely has a great future ahead of him.
With the team, he won the Supercopa de España in 2018 and then in 2019, he won the La Liga.
As regards his international career, Arthur has played for Brazil at the Under-17 level in 2003 and then in 2018, he was given his national team call. Thus far, he has played 18 games for the team and is yet to net in any goal although he was part of the team that won the Copa América in 2019.
After the competition, he was named part of the Copa America team of the tournament.
