Barry Sanders is a native of Wichita, Kansas. He was born on the 16th of July 1968 into the family of Shirley and William Sanders. He grew up with his brothers Boyd, Bryon, and Lynn Sanders and a sister Nancy Sanders.

Sanders spent the better part of his childhood in Kansas where he attended the Wichita North High School.  During his second year, Sanders joined the school team at the tailback.
