Dan Marino’s Early Life

Dan Marino was born on September 15, 1961, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to his parents, Daniel and Veronica Marino. He is of Polish and Italian roots.

His father was a newspaper vendor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette while his mother worked as a school crossing guard. Marino is the oldest of his parents’ three children. The other two are Cindi Marino and Debbie Marino.

He was basically raised in South Oakland and he had his early education at St. Regis Catholic Elementary School and later Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. Marino is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

As of 2021, Dan Marino’s net worth is $50 million. He was able to amass this fortune during his career and also from other endorsement deals.

The Truth About His Fortune

Dan Marino made almost all his fortune from his career earnings and endorsements. In 1983, he signed a four-year $2.1 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. Before he retired, he earned $6 million per season in the final season.

His salary during his NFL career was $51.5 million. Also, he earned quite a lot of money from his endorsements even after he had retired.

Also, he has investments that keep the money flowing for him. In 2002, it was reported that he had over $23 million in liquid assets and $15 million in real estate, and millions of dollars in other private investments.

His private investments include banks, office buildings, and also a golf course. Marino earned $2 million per year as a co-host of “Inside the NFL” alone not to mention the movies and television shows he featured in.

He also earned $1 million from some of his endorsements with companies such as AutoNation and Nabisco. All these earnings immensely added to Dan Marino’s net worth.

Financial Issues may have Affected Dan Marino’s Net Worth

It was reported in 2012 that Dan Marino had a loss of approximately $13.6 million after Digital Domain Media Group Inc. went bankrupt. It was not actually known how much he lost as no one knew how much he had invested in the company.

Some people speculated that his shares in the company were worth $14.5 million but after the value dropped, it was reported that Marino had lost $13.6 million.

Dan Marino had another loss of $600,000 in 2008 after the crashing of the real estate market. He had bought the property in 2005 for $2.95 million.

In 2009, he had trouble selling his home in Florida, he had initially listed the house for $15.9 million in 2006 before reducing it to $13.5 million.

Still, he couldn’t get a buyer for his 15,000-square-foot Tuscan home. The home had 10 bedrooms, a pool, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, and also an outdoor pond with bass swimming inside.

He was lucky to later sell the house in 2011 but for a reduced price of $7.2 million. Then in 2018 again, he made another notable loss when he sold a townhouse in Weston. He had bought the property in 2007 for $655,000 but he sold it for $565,000.

Marino has been married to Claire D. Veazey since 1985. They tied the knot at St Regis Roman Catholic Church. The couple has six children together including two who were adopted from China.

In 2013, Dan Marino revealed that he had an affair with a CBS employee, Donna Savattere in 2005. As a result, he fathered a seventh child, Chloe. It was reported that Marino had paid Savattere millions of dollars to keep their affair away from the media.

In the same vein, he made a cameo in Adam Sandler’s Little Nicky movie. 1999 saw Dan voicing himself in the famous American animated sitcom The Simpsons. This was the animation’s 10th season.

Additionally, he made appearances in the movies Bad Boys II and Holy Man. Marino also featured in Hootie and the Blowfish’s music video for their single ‘Only Wanna Be with You.’

The former football legend is also a philanthropist. After his son, Michael was diagnosed with autism, with his wife Claire’s help, they established the Dan Marino Foundation in 1992. With the aid of the foundation, over $22 million has been put into research, services, as well as treatment for the cause.

There is also the Dan Marino Centre established in 1995. The center has the sole aim of researching and providing services to children with neurodevelopment disabilities.

He also teams up with other celebrities to create awareness about autism.

Dan Marino now serves as a co-host for HBO’s “Inside the NFL” and CBS “The NFL Today”. He also spends his time playing golf and hopes to become a great golfer one day.

Also, as pointed out in the introduction, Dan returned to the Miami Dolphins in 2014. He became a member of the team management’s front liners and was named Special Advisor to the team’s CEO, president, and Vice-chairman.
