Dillon Tate is an American baseball pitcher, who formerly played at the collegiate level for the University of California. He currently plays for the Baltimore Orioles, where he was traded to from the New York Yankees in 2016. He is widely recognized as a pitcher of exceptional talent abilities and was drafted right out of college as a fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft by the Texas Rangers.

Although Tate is still in the developing stages of his professional career, his prospects are expected to go beyond that of a mid-rotation starter to a point where the Orioles can build a solid tactic around his pitching efforts. His statistics are considered impressive for the style of play and level, and while he may not be the best pitcher in the Major League, he is well on his way to becoming one. Bradley is considered one to watch out for in the coming years.

Dillon Tate Biography

The star-on-the-rise pitcher was born on May 1, 1994, in Los Angeles, California. He completed his early education at Claremont High School in California in 2012. While he was there, he joined the school’s baseball squad, although he got little to no playing time during his freshman season. However, he joined the Urban Youth Academy training program run by the Major League in Compton. His talents were still fairly unimpressive during this time so he couldn’t make the cut for the MLB draft while in high school.

Dillon Tate went on to further his education at the University of California. He was also a member of UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, the school’s baseball team. Tate chose UC because they were a Division I level program and they offered him a scholarship to come play for them. During his very first season, Tate pitched three innings in four appearances, accruing a 9.00 ERA or earned run average. Thanks to weight training, the athlete put on extra pounds, which ultimately impacted his playing abilities positively.

During his sophomore season, Tate rose through the ranks to become the team’s closer. At the end of the season, his ERA was a 1.45, with 46 strikeouts and 12 saves. Due to an unfortunate injury suffered by one of Gaucho’s starters, Tate was promoted to the position of starting pitcher in his junior year. He went on to start 14 games, pitch 8 wins against 5 losses, with 111 strikeouts in 103 ⅓ innings and 2.26 ERA.

He was rated amongst the top prospects by scouts, coaches, and followers of the sport alike during the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. It did not come as a surprise when he was picked by Texas Rangers as the fourth overall draft pick. He earned $4.2 million as a signing bonus from the team. Tate immediately sprang to action with a magnificent debut for Spokane Indians before being advanced to Hickory Crawdads. Tate suffered a hamstring injury which kept him out of the game for a while. During his time at Hickory, Tate pitched 65 innings, with 55 strikeouts, 27 walks, and 5.12 ERA. The speed of his ball reduced from 98 km/h to $93 km/h.

In August 2016, Tate was traded to the New York Yankees along with two others in exchange for Carlos Beltran. Dillon Tate was subsequently assigned to the Charleston RiverDogs, followed by the Scott’s Scorpions, Tampa Yankees, and Trenton Thunder. By the end of the 2017 season, he had pitched 25 innings with 3.24 ERA. He was traded once again in 2018, ending up with the Baltimore Orioles, where he currently plays.

Dillon Tate is the youngest of three children born to Lenora and Anthony Tate. His parents are of African-American descent and they currently reside in the Claremont area in California. Tate has two brothers named David and Douglas. His family is pretty tight-knit and enjoys spending a lot of time in each other’s company. In fact, Tate is inspired to work harder and be successful in his career because of a desire to make them proud and ensure they are well taken care of in life.

Stats

Tate came back from a shaky 2016 season by pitching 82.1 innings with 4.70 ERA. Even though he couldn’t play at the beginning of the 2017 season due to an injury, he went ahead to put up a 6-0 record with 2.62 ERA, finishing with an impressive 25 innings with 3.24 ERA. He is expected to return to his top leading prospect ways in the coming season seeing as he was named to Baltimore Orioles’ 40-man roster.
