Who is Hamza Choudhury?

The Leicester city defensive midfielder is of the Bangladeshi-Grenadian ancestry who was raised in a traditional Bengali Muslim family. He was born on 1 October 1997 in Loughborough, England. His mother, Rafia Dewan Choudhury, and step-father, Dewan Murshid Choudhury are both Sylhetis from Habiganj, Bangladesh while his biological father is from the Caribbean country of Grenadian which makes it possible for the whiz kid to play for the Grenadian national team.

Hamza was brought up with a biological sister and with many family members including cousins around him. He also has a stepbrother from his mother’s second marriage after she got divorced from her first which was to Hamza’s father.

Choudhury always attributes his success in football to his family whose love and supportive counsel have kept his pushing in his career.  He admitted he was raised with a highly competitive and winning mentality. He also added they (his family) usually play almost everything but mostly football and badminton. He grew up in a one -time lower-middle-class family background. All thanks to his earnings, he has been able to elevate his household.

He was raised a devout Muslim. Growing up, he attended after-school classes learning how to read and write the Quran. He said he always recites the Ayat Al-Kursi and other duas before leaving the changing room as he was taught by his mother.

Aside from playing football, Choudhury enjoys playing piano and he intends to improve his basic level in the nearest future.

His love for football was inspired by his mother who would take him to play the game as a kid in order to burn off his excessive energy.

Choudhury began his senior team career with Leicester City in 2015 but was sent on loan to Burton Albion until 2017 when he was brought back. He made his debut for Leicester City on the 9^th September 2017 when he came in in the 82^nd minute of an EFL Cup 3^rd round home win against Liverpool.

On 28 November 2017, the player made his premier league debut for the club when he came in the 83^rd minute of a home win against Tottenham. He began his league proper on 14^th April 2018 in a 2-2 away defeat to Burnley.

He signed a new four-year contract on 30^th august 2016 with Leicester. He scored his first senior goal for Leicester in the 86^th minute in a 3-0 away win at Newcastle United in January 2020. His contract with Leicester would expire on 30th June 2023.

In May 2018, he made his national team debut playing for England national U-21 football team. Choudhury is one out of two footballers of south Asian heritage currently playing in the premier league.  Thus far, he has recorded 33 appearances, 1 goal and 2 assist in the league record.

1. The 5 feet 10 tall English footballer was included in England’s 23 man squad for the 2019 UEFA European U-21 Championship but he was issued a red card during the 2^nd half of the opening 2-1 defeat to France in Cesena.

2. Choudhury has a distinctive hairstyle that makes him stand out. He admitted his mother used to force him to cut his hair but now he doesn’t. the player’s afro isn’t difficult to notice  and it seems he has no plans of changing it any time soon.
