When Arizona Diamondbacks’ second baseman Ketel Marte was crying during the June 24 game with the White Sox at Chicago’s Rate Field, it was thought that he was emotional because of a teammate’s injury. This is not so. It has been confirmed that the Dominican player broke down because a fan heckled him about his mother, whom he tragically lost in a car accident back in 2017.
During the game’s seventh inning, the MLB star who had hit a home run in the first was visibly upset, with the team’s manager, Torey Lovullo, consoling him alongside Geraldo Perdomo. Speaking about the incident after the game, Lovullo confirmed that the fan taunted Ketel about his late mom. “It was a terrible moment. Fans are nasty and fans go too far sometimes,” he told the Diamondbacks’ broadcast team.
Perdomo also confirmed the incident, calling on the league to take decisive action against such taunting. Visibly angry about what happened during a post-match interview, Marte’s Dominican teammate demanded that the fan be banned. “We can’t continue to do that s**t here in MLB,” he said, adding that the fan “should be banned for sure.”
Ketel Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a 2017 car accident in the Dominican Republic. Her death has been an irreplaceable loss for the MLB star. During 2021’s Mother’s Day, he took to Instagram to honor Elpidia in an emotional post that reads:
“God first of all, may the Lord have you in a good place, you know very well that I miss you, all this time without you is just a void in my heart, but we are under the will of the Lord, I love you forever and you will always live in me, I love you mother and I miss you very much ???Happy Mother’s Day.”
