Lachlan Wales is one of the young Australian football prospects currently making waves for the Olyroos of Australia at the Tokyo Olympics. He plays first-tier football in the A-League for Western United. Although he is yet to be invited to the senior national side, the forward previously played for Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne City before joining Western United in October 2020.

Before he began playing active football, Wales was a member of the Wamberal Surf Lifesaving Club. And has won a number of beach flags titles. No wonder when he runs, he speeds like a deer; giving him an added advantage with the ball.

Who Is Lachlan Wales?

He was born Lachlan Andrew Wales on the 19th of October 1997 in Terrigal, New South Wales, Australia. He was raised in his native town by his parents whose identity is not publicized. The same thing applies to his family and educational background.

However one thing remained clear, he didn’t start playing football early until the age of 16. In 2013, he was at the Football New South Wales National Training Center (FNSW NTC), where his skills were nurtured signaling the beginning of his youth football career. A year later, he joined the Central Coast Mariners Academy and played in the Y-League and the National Premier Leagues.

After growing through the ranks of the academy, he made his first professional appearance for the Central Coastal Mariners in April 2017. He went on to make 10 more appearances for the club in the 2017/18 season, registering 2 assists in 7 games. The Mariners rounded up the season in the 10th position.

He landed a 2-year deal with Melbourne Cit in June 2018 and debuted for the club in a 2-1 victory over city rivals Melbourne Victory in the famous Melbourne Derby. Wales got his first professional goal in a 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets in December 2018.

The forward exited the club at the end of the 2019/20 A-League season. And signed a two years contract with Western United on 2nd October 2020.

1. His Grandfather Introduced Him To Football

As a child growing up in Terrigal, Wales had exposure to several different sports, unlike most of his family members whose interest lies in the Rugby League. The decision to ply his trade in football was necessitated by his grandfather who introduced him to football.

2. Growing Up At The Beach Improved His Football

It wasn’t just soccer that Wales was good at during his younger days. His winter and summer periods are covered with lots of sporting activities. He plays football with the local club Terrigal United during the winter, and during summer, he competed and excelled at State Surf Life Saving carnivals.

During the carnivals, he runs for the beach flags, which was where he probably got his speed from. he would go on to win 3 state medals from under-8s to under-11s despite coming from a little Surf Lifesaving Club.

According to him, the beach experience made him enjoy football.

3. Lachlan Wales Was Initially Listed In The Olyroos Olympic Squad As A Train-on Player

Following a remarkable individual performance with Western United, Graham Arnold rewarded the forward with a spot in Australia’s Olympic team as a train-on player. According to him, it was an honor to play in an Olympic atmosphere. But the opportunity for him to be listed as an official member of the Olympic team came when changes were made to the squad regulations.

While growing up he had always dreamed of wearing green and gold to represent his country on the Olympic stage.

4. He Scored His First Olympic Goal Against Argentina At The Tokyo Olympics

He didn’t only fulfill his childhood dream of adorning his country’s colors on the Olympic stage, he also scored a goal in a 2-0 win over Argentina. He netted his first Olympic goal in the 14th minute of the game, following Joel king’s curling low cross.

5. He Was Suspended In 2019 For Unprofessional Conduct

Wales alongside 3 of his Olyroos teammates were suspended from international duty following an incident with a Cambodian woman while on tour. According to earlier reports, the 4 players were alleged to have maltreated the women whom they invited over to one of their games and hosted her at their hotel.

Though there was nothing to suggest assault, however, the woman wasn’t happy with them for leaving her stranded in the hotel. She lodged complaints at the Australian Embassy about the possibility of recorded videos and pictures of her taken during the encounter.

She later withdrew the complaints, but it was too late, the case had already been forwarded to Sport Australia and Football Federation Australia.

After 7 months of intensive investigation, it was discovered that the 4 players broke a curfew set by their coach Graham Arnold.
