Portuguese professional footballer Diogo Jota, who plays for Liverpool, died in a devastating car crash that also claimed the life of his brother Andre Silva. The tragic accident happened in Zamor, Spain, 10 days after Jota’s wedding to his longtime girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three children.
The 28-year-old forward exchanged vows with Rute on June 22, 2025, after three years of engagement. His untimely death comes as a shock to the football world. Apart from the fact that he just got married, his brother also died in the accident.
From what we gathered, the brothers were in a Lamborghini, which sped off the road after a tyre blew out while overtaking another vehicle. Their car tumbled and burst into flames. Moments before the tragic accident, Diogo Jota’s wife shared a video of their wedding on Instagram, with a caption that reads, “A day we will never forget.”
In a statement that confirmed Diogo Jota’s death, Liverpool Football Club described it as an unimaginable loss.
“[We] are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
The English Premier League also released a statement on X, mourning the Liverpool forward.
“Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club.”
