Madelen Janogy is a member of the Sweden women’s national football team who plays first division football for Hammarby IF of the Swedish Damallsvenskan. She launched her senior club career at home in the second division league (Elitettan) in 2010 with Falkopings KIK.

After playing for a number of clubs in Sweden, she joined Wolfburg of the German Bundesliga in 2019. However, she ended her contract with the club a few months into the deal. She returned to Sweden and rejoined Pitea, a club she played for before moving to Germany.

Biography of Madelen Janogy

She was born Madelen Fatimma Maria Janogy on 12th November 1995 in Falkoping, Sweden to a Malian father Ibrahim Janogy, and her Swedish mother. She grew up in home town alongside her sister Victoria.

Growing up she had no idea that she was going to play football since her family didn’t know much about football. And because of that, she didn’t start playing early. She began to play soccer at the age of 11 after her father was advised and persuaded to let her play.

Though she is a Swedish citizen, she has African roots, since her father is originally from Mali in West Africa.

Madelen Janogy’s Career

Janogy has been playing football since the year 2010. She has played majorly at home with various clubs with a short spell at Wolfsburg in Germany. Her first taste of club football began when she joined Falkopings KIK, a local team in her hometown that played in the second division league (Elitettan).

She spent 3 years at the local club with 53 appearances and 48 goals to her name. In 2014 she joined Mallbackens IF with whom she won her first Elitettan title in her debut season.

After securing the Elitettan title, the club gained promotion to the first division Damallsvenskan. This made her stay and play two more seasons before she secured a move to Pitea when Mallbackens IF suffered relegation at the end of the 2016 campaign.

She went to win the Damallsvenskan title with Pitea at the end of the 2018 season. Janogy later joined the German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg after signing an 18-months contract with the club.

Internationally, she hasn’t represented Sweden at any youth level yet, but she was called to the senior national side in January 2019. She was introduced as a substitute in the 61st minute in a goalless draw against South on 22nd January 2019.

Four months later the forward got her first international goal in a 1 nill win over South Korea in a friendly match on 31st May 2019.  She was listed in the 2019 FIFA World Cup squad, scoring a goal in stoppage time to hand Sweden a 2-0 win over Chile in their first match of the tournament. She appeared in 3 games but all coming from the bench as a substitute.

At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, she helped the team to clinch the Silver medal.

1. Janogy Made History As The First Female Player With African Roots To Play For Sweden National Team

The forward made history on 22nd January 2019 as the first female player with African roots to play for the Senior Sweden Wome’s national team. She got that African blood from her father Ibrahim Janogy who was born in Mali but migrated to Sweden in the earliest part of the 1990s.

There was none before her, but more would probably come in the future.

2. She And Her Sister Bear Names With Royalty

Madelen and Victoria are the names of princesses of the Swedish royal family. Their parents have named them after the princesses of the royal family; meaning they now share names with royalty.

3. She Wouldn’t Have Been A Professional Footballer If Not For Her Teacher

Janogy started playing football at the age of 11. She didn’t start quite early, but thanks to the advice and encouragement from her teacher who one day told her father to get her a team since she is playing well. Her father took the advice and start taking her to train with a team.

She knew a lot of girls that started playing quite early at the age of 4 and 5. And she thought they would be better than her, but, all that changed when she started training. She actually did well.

4. Amnesia Halted Her Contract With Wolfsburg

She suffered a sleeping disorder after signing her 18-months contract with Wolfsburg in Germany. The best she can sleep at night is 3-4 hours, and she has to wake up early for training. It affected her ability to train and perform well.

She spoke to her coaches about the challenge, they understood with her. So, her contract with the club ended within a few months.

She returned to Sweden and spent 4 months without playing to enable her to get better.

5. She Loves To Dance

She loves listening to music. And whenever she listens, she dances. But she doesn’t dance before people or in public in front of her family.

Most of the time, she dances before her games.

6. She Has A Favorite Pet Named Simba

The Swedish forward is fond of animals, she prefers to keeps dogs as pets. She has a favorite dog named Simba. She always shares pictures of the cute Simba on her Instagram page.

Janogy is not a regular tall girl. She has an average height, standing at 1.64 m (5 ft 4+1⁄2 in). Her bodyweight is measured as 57kg (125lbs).
