Former WBC international female super middleweight champion Marciela Cornejo is not married. She grew up with 8 people in a small home. Although the names of her parents is not available, it is known that she started working alongside her parents on the farms.
During her formative years, several members of her family were incarcerated for various charges. However, that did not deter her from playing volleyball and softball on her college team. For the love her family, Cornejo has written a children’s book for her nephews and nieces.

Marciela Cornejo is not married. She has not revealed if she is romantically involved with someone. Although the Washington native is not married, she is often referred to as a mother to “10 children”.

There are reports that claim that she has family in Mexico and Seattle.

1. Maricela Cornejo wanted to become an actress
While growing up, the professional boxer had dreams of becoming a lawyer. However, she later discovered she would not want to work in an office so she moved to the entertainment capital, Hollywood, where she met a famous actor who promised her movie role only if she lost weight.
She soon joined the Wild Card Boxing gym in Hollywood and started training only to discover her hidden talent of boxing under the tutelage of her ex-coach ex-fighter Duarte. She only had 4 amateur bouts before she turned Pro in August 2012.
With an impressive record, she caught the attention of WBC and also Golden Promotions Chairman Oscar De La Hoya who signed her to a contract.
The Mexican-American boxer moved to Las Vegas to find a boxing trainer. Between 2015 to 2016, she competed for the international female super middleweight title, which she won against Latashia Burton.
Barely eight months later, she met Nancy Rodriguez, who at that time works for the WBC and wanted her to become her manager. She was later signed a contract to fight for the vacant WBC World female Middleweight title in 2016.
Although she lost the fight, she made history as being part of the first major world title fight held in New Zealand.
The Prosser Washington native became among the top contenders in the 160-pound division after winning three consecutive fights making her record 16-5 with 6 knockouts. At the moment, she is ranked ESPN’s No. 3 middleweight with no record of beating an over -500 fighter since 2019.
2. The fighter was sexually molested by a family member while growing up
According to Women rock project, boxing became Marciela’s sanctuary following what she experienced as a child. She allegedly suffered as a sexual abuse survivor. She revealed that she was abused when she was around 4-5 by a family friend.
When she happened, she did not share with her family and made her a very troubled child who was always acting out. In addition to that, she tried to commit suicide many times. The boxer revealed how she pressed a knife to her body when she was in high school.
3. Marciela Cornejo worked in a construction company before becoming a boxer
The boxer worked with a construction company, Healthcare, Technical Services after she moved to Los Angeles. She also worked for an attorney whom she met through a mutual friend in Tacoma, Washington.
While she was working in LA, her mind was set on pursuing her dreams. Her employer later laid her off and she decided to focus on fighting. At that time, she thought, she she built herself as a fighter, she would get a shot at being on stage.

4. Marciela Cornejo spent 10 years in prison
While training to become a boxer, Marciela got involved in several ill friendships. She got her arrested and banished from the casino city.
Marciela also faced drug charges and subsequently spent 10 years in prison. Reports say her prison time was due to the fact that she thought a friend of hers left her as a scapegoat during a drug arrest.
At some point, she also battled drug addiction before she found redemption in the ring.
5. The 37-year-old women’s professional boxer is also an author
Maricela ‘La Viva’ Cornejo has a passion for helping people and making lives better for them. Surrounded by numerous nieces and nephews and her alleged children, Marciela wrote a children’s book titled Tia Te Ama, to inspire them.
Her first children’s book has two versions: English and Spanish afterit was published in 2021.
