One look at Markus Ruhl is bound to send very cold shivers cascading down your spine. This is because, Markus, a German retired professional bodybuilder, was able to build his body into ‘monstrous’ proportions and became known as the ‘German Nightmare’ because of his incredibly huge size and unbelievably ripped shape.

The ‘German Nightmare’ was remarkably popular due to his huge shoulders and very mighty arms that looked like they were bound to crush any opponent. He has taken part in several bodybuilding competitions and once won the Toronto Pro bodybuilding competition in 1999 before retiring.

Markus Ruhl Biography, Family

Markus Rühl was given birth to in Darmstadt, Germany on the 22nd day of February 1972. According to reports, in his childhood days, he dreamed of becoming a football star and actively took part in playing several games in school. However, his dream of playing football was cut short when he sustained a huge injury on the field of play and forced him to stop playing.

While trying to rever from the injury, a doctor advised him to work out a little in the gym to aid the recovery process. It was in the process of recovering from the injury in the gym that he fell deeply in love with lifting weights and bodybuilding.

Markus Ruhl Professional Bodybuilding Career

The former potential soccer star, Markus made a switch from football to bodybuilding when he was introduced to a bodybuilding doctor to help him recover from his knee injury. Consequently, at the age of 18, Markus started deep training. Starting out, he weighed 63kg but within just a short span of the period he grew up to 100kg. It was this sudden body transformation that encouraged Markus to train harder so as to become a renown bodybuilder.

In 1994 Markus registered for his first bodybuilding competition which was the Newcomer Championships, but unfortunately, he sustained an injury within the week that the competition was to be held thus, he missed out of the championship.

However, upon his recovery from the injury some months later, Markus started participating in bodybuilding competitions. The first competition he took part in was the Bachau Cup in Babenhausen which he eventually won. This made Markus very popular and heightened his morale as well.

Again, Markus also competed in the Grand Prix competition in Hesse. However, he was able to finish as the runner up. After getting disqualified in the 1997 Mr. Olympia competition, Markus stepped up his game and in 2000 he emerged as the winner of the Toronto Pro competition where he secured his first Pro Card.

Subsequently, Markus reached the climax of his career as he participated in a series of bodybuilding competitions such as the 2002 Mr. Olympia competition where he placed 7th. He also participated in the Night of Champions which he also won. However, in 2003, he placed 3rd in the Arnold Classic.

In 2004 he still participated in the Mr. Olympia competition where he placed 5th, yet in the 2006 season of the same competition, he placed 15th. Nevertheless, in 2006 he was among the 3 best bodybuilders in the Austria Pro Grand Prix and in the same year, he placed 8th in Mr. Olympia competition New York Pro where he became the second runner up and in the 2009 Mr. Olympia he placed 15th. Again in the 2010 IFBB Europa Super Show, he placed 7th.

Away from his bodybuilding performances, Markus has also made appearances in movies. He made his debut on the big screen in the movie titled XXXL-Big Beyond Belief in 2000, and in 2004 he appeared in the movie Made in Germany. Markus also played a role in the movie Big and Loving It in 2007, while in 2010 he appeared in Ruhling 4 Ever.

Workouts

During his career, Markus was very dedicated to his training; he trained for six days every week while he dedicated an entire day for his shoulder workouts. Most of Markus’ training in his daily routine was aimed at getting extreme pumps.

Some of his workouts included; a full range of motion which gave him maximum pumps. He was able to achieve this by lifting heavy weights with a rep of 1-2. For his shoulder workouts, he did many rounds of deep range heavyweight lift which penetrates down to his muscles.

Furthermore, in his shoulder workouts, Markus aimed at mixing high volume with heavy weights such as Dumbbell shoulder press starting with a warm-up of 30 reps, then, 6 heavy sets of 16-4 reps; Alternating front dumbbell raises of 4 sets with 12-8 reps, upright rows of 3 sets and 10-8 reps, standing lateral raise up to 5 sets of 15-12 reps, bent-over lateral raise in 4 sets of 12-8 reps, dumbbell shrugs of 5 sets and 12-6 reps.

These highly strenuous workouts he engaged in were not without an equally sustaining nutrition as his meals are often laden with high calorie. Averagely Markus gobbled a minimum of 7000 calories daily which are often from freshly clean meals.

Personal Life, Married, Wife Children

Markus Ruhl is a married man. He is married to a woman who has been identified simply as Simone although there are no further details about his children.

Also, as mentioned earlier, Markus was also a movie star as he had appeared in a series of movies. Markus also seems to be very close to his fellow German bodybuilder Ralf Moller.
