Career Highlights
Chris began his professional football playing career with the NFL club – Washington Redskins in the year 2000. Having been considered the premier offensive tackle prospect of the 2000 NFL draft, the Washington Redskins drafted him third overall. A knee injury he sustained earlier ruled him out of being considered for the NFL Combine selection. He was the only offensive tackle drafted in the top 19 drafts that year and the first offensive lineman in the first round of an NFL draft since 1978.
Chris locked down his place starting as the left tackle for the Washington Redskins, and his stellar performances earned him selection to 6 Pro Bowls. Only four offensive players started every game for the Washington Redskins in 2000, and Chris was one of them. His excellent showing earned him the “Co-Offensive Rookie of the Month” for October that year. An injury ruled him out of the last three quarters of the year’s season finale. In 2001, Chris was in the offensive starting lineup for the first 16 games, and was voted to the Pro Bowl, and won a few game balls for his performance. He was featured on the front page of the December issue of “Sports Illustrated” in 2001.
Another stellar performance by Chris in the 2002 NFL season in his starting Left Tackle role earned him another trip to the Pro Bowl. In 2003, he equally started in his left tackle position but missed a few games due to a knee injury – the second in his professional career.
Chris’ performance over the years earned him a new seven-year contract in the Off-Season of 2005, with a generous $ 16 million signing bonus and the main contract reportedly worth $ 47 million. Chris was nominated to the Pro Bowl for three consecutive years starting 2004 to 2007. He was fined $ 12,500 later that year for “an illegal block” to an opposing player; he later apologized to the player and stated that he was only doing his job to protect his teammates.
Chris was named the team captain of the Redskins in 2008, but he sustained an injury that year which put a halt to his season-starting record. In 2009, he sustained another injury to his neck during a game, which almost left him paralyzed from the neck down. After consultations with doctors on the long-term effect the injury could have on his overall state of health, he decided to retire in March 2010, after 10 years playing for the Redskins. He became a coach with the Redskins after retirement.
