He attended the University of Pittsburg on an Athletic scholarship and was drafted to play in the 18th round of the 1974 NFL draft after his college years and was selected by the Greenbay Packers as the 376th pick.
He sustained a neck injury while at camp and could not proceed with a career in professional football as a result and had to be placed on the reserve list.

His breakthrough was when he was signed on as the defensive coach for the Dallas Cowboys and leading them to the Super Bowl XVII in the 1989 season. Their defense was considered to be one of the best.
Dave Wannstedt was signed to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears in 1993, he replaced the legendary coach, Mike Ditka, and later returned as defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins after he was fired, he was under intense pressure to replay Ditka’s success. His move to Miami Dolphins reunited him with long-time friend and mentor Jimmy Johnson.
Johnson retired in 2000 and Dave Wannstedt was picked as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, he led the team to win the 2000 AFC East Championship.
